hey there guys, soon i'll be setting up my 180l tank and furnishing it, then cycling it (just got my test kit today and tried out my ancient goldfish water!)

was wondering on these fish to add, once it's cycled?

8 or more Tiger Barbs (barbus tetrazona) as i love the way they look and everywhere suggest decent numbers to reduce aggression toward other fish.
10 Zebra Danio's (brachydanio rerio)
6 Bronze Catfish (corydoras aeneus) as i think they're sweet and also read are better kept in groups
Some sort of group of Shrmp (LFS has Rock Shrimp which are pretty big)

Would the shrimp out compete the cory's at all? or do they eat totally different food?

Thanks in advance

Tim

P.S. if my tank s really understocked, suggestions on other species to put in there much appreciated!

The shrimp and cories would be compatible, but I'm doubtful about tiger barbs and shrimp. I think you might end up with harassed shrimp that are constantly hiding. Never tried, though.

Your tank wouldn't be understocked. In fact, you'd be somewhat overstocked once all the fish are fully grown. Zebra danios grow to ~2 inches, the cories and tiger barbs get to ~2.5 inches. I'd either leave the danios out, and add a couple more tiger barbs or some suitably tough fish that can hold their own against the barbs and can be kept solitary or in pairs (bristlenose plec, kribensis come to mind; kribensis I would definitely not combine with shrimp, though). Or forget about the tiger barbs in which case the shrimp would be safe and you'd have more options for additional stocking (like blue or pearl gouramis).

Like the poster above said, you probably would be slightly overstocked, but with good water quality, frequent water changes etc I should think most of those fish will be fine.

Danios are pretty much bulletproof, mine appear to be invincible and i'm sure they would survive happily living in a dirty puddle, IME tiger barbs are pretty much the same, quite hardy and very entertaining, with danios and tigers barbs you will have a VERY lively tank.

My only suggestion would be to leave the corys for a few months until the tank is established a bit more as they can be quite delicate and they are relatively expensive compared to the rest of your fish.

No idea about the shrimps tho ;P

i don't think that would be overstocked - close to it though. As above, provide good filtration and regular maintenance and your fish will be fine. Not sure about the shrimp, you could give it a go, if they get hassled just take them back to the shop. A adult male Bristlenose would be a really nice and practical addition.

yeah i'd scratch the shrimp from the list but otherwise fine :good:

Is the tank going to be planted? If so I would swap out the shrimp and catfish for a couple of kribensis. That would be an ideal stocklist. You could get away with a slightly smaller shoal of zebras too.

thanks for the replies guys, the shrimp were just an idea that i had, but if the barbs would harass them, then i have no problem leaving them out, got a small tank my mate gave me which i can set up if i really want shrimp!. i'm going for a lively tank, so if barbs and zebras will give me that, i'll be happy with just those! :)
