The second or third week I came up with traces of ammonia (I think it was 0.25) so I did a water change and everything went back to normal again. (by the way, the seeded media was still in the tank at this time.) Seeing that it was almost a month into this 'cycle' and my readings showed nitrates I removed the media.
Why did you remove the media for? Seems like an awkward thing to do at best -_-

P.T.

I agree, the media should have been left in. I really don't think LoveMyOscar understands what I was saying, overcomplicating it.

The tank does not need to cycle, as the filter is already home to all the bacteria needed from the other tank. It is the filter that cycles, not the water.

I have a sump on one of my FW tanks for no other reason than to keep the equipment out of the display tank.... I upgraded the display tank once yet the sump remained. There was no noticable cycle, guess the majority of the beneficial bacteria was where the food was (waste) that being primarily in the filter and the sumps substrate.

Now I think all those in this three way debate have their merits and are all correct in your individule views....

so the question really has to be asked.... "what you arguing about?" esp given the dynamics of a small eco system means something can work for one person and not another for no devisable reason.

PS: cheesey, I was of the same thinking as Jae1525 on your nick too..... but then I reminded myself you keep fish so you cant be that far from the straight and narrow :D

/me dons my flame-proof suit :ninja:

Well I think that just about sums it up then!!!

I have 2 agree with styker that all systems are diff beacuse there is so many factors to take into consideration... Tap water stats, filter type, temp, even the air quality in your house!!!

Its a good experiment though and if I can get my tank cycled faster and stock it to almost capacity then its worth a shot!

If all else fails and it takes 4-6 weeks to cycle what have I lost?
