I have a 10 litre nano cube. I haven't got a heater for it yet but have a spare 50w heater but would this be dangerous to use i any way?

Does anyoe know of a small heater I can use?

I think 50w is the smallest heater you're likely to find; it would be fine for your nano.

What are you thinking of keeping in there?

One Betta.

Thaks Jity that's very helpful, ot sure why the OP was moaning. The thing is I don't wanna spend out if my 50w is ok to use in there. If it isn't because it is likely to overheat or something the 'll buy a 25w. I just wondered that was all.

oh also the heater slots in the back, I read it doesn't keep it as hot in this tank so maybe a 50w would be ok? It's the same size.

I have a 25w Interpet heater in a 16 litre cube.

I don't think I'd use a 50w in a 10 litre, myself.

They are selling 25W heaters in pets at home now.

the problem with the higher wat heater is: it puts a lot of strain on the heater (turning on and off much more frequently) and the thermostat isn't as accurate (years abo, before small heaters came out, I had the smallest heater I could get at the time in a small tank, and even on its lowest setting, nearly cooked my fire mouths).

ahh that's what I wanted to know, thanks for that. I'll get a 25w. I only see the interpet ones at pets at home and they're very long. Too long to go in the compartment in the back of the tank. I'll go for one on ebay. Thanks very much for the advice

A 50w in theory would be fine, they switch off when they reach the desired temp. I would say you would be ok putting a 50w in there, but it would take up a fiar bit more space than some of the tiny 25W ones ive seen. Based on that theory, you could put a 300W in there if it was all you had.

I think the problems only begin if the heater fails. They normally fail in the "ON" position, and a 300W heater in a small tank will boil it in minutes. A 25W heater would give you more time to spot the problem before it damages any livestock, or anything else.

I would say if your happy with a 50w going in there, it wont be so much of a problem, but to safeguard against the above, its always better to match the heater to the tank. I think even Argos do a 25w heater now.

:)

It would be overkill I would say. You would need to contantly monitor it. I had a 50w in a 35l and it took my temp to 32 when it got stuck so a 10l would have no chance. The 25w are peace of mind

This helped me too, well put together answer thanks mate :good:
Had to borrow a 300w heater for a 90L, used it but i wasnt too sure but it'll do until i switch back to the normal heater.

In short - Its possible, but not recommended.

Only if your desperate would you consider a 300w in a Cube, and i wouldnt be able to leave the tank i dont think....

EDIT: Having just re-read how big said cube is, i would be happy to see any pics of someone demonstrating how a 300w would fit (turned off of course  ) into a 10l?

Would it even go in? Im not so sure!

No chance, i have a 300w in my big tank and its 30cm tall

Think we're getting confused a little here;

Marie asked if a 50w would be okay in a 10L nano and you said "you could put a 300w in there if it was all you had." but you wouldn't recommend it.
So basicually i was saying thank you for putting my mind at rest as i'm currently using a 300w in a 90L while my heater is in a Q tank.

Don't think a 300w wouldn't fit in a 10L it only just fits in my 90L and i had to pretty much hit the max water line to get it in.
