10-gallon tank ideas

Hi! So I recently joined this site and started my first thread. The thread left of with me saying I was gonna do some corys in a 10G….. But then I kinda fell for other species!!!
I don’t have my tank cycled yet, as I have decided to get the tank on Friday, cycle it through for a while with plants for a few months,( could shrimp go in whilst this is happening?) and stock it @ Christmas.
So I have some species questions!

Cherry Barbs—- could these fish go in my tank? With just their little school? I kinda love these.

Tetras—- Looking for good species of tetra.
I heard that neons are good, and white skirts are . But will they be happy?

Gourami---- I heard only dwarfs are Ok... And I keep coming back to them! Every time I look at fish I rule them out.. but I just cant stop looking at them!!



Pea puffers— this ones are not for me. I have a friend who is getting a 10 G.. and is confused. Four different sites that say four different things... They wanna know which is advisable and correct.
-No. They need 20G
-Yes! 3 could be happy!
-Yes, one.
-Yes, two.

Ok, if you want a community tank dont do dwarf gouramis... They will murder everything... I mean it... I've seen it... Cherry barbs need a 20 gallon long or more (30 is better)... There are tetras that could work lile ember tetras... You may like chilli rasboras! They are small but you could put about 12-15 in there to make a large school

Can you get a bigger tank?
The longer and wider the tank, the more fish you can keep in it and the more variety you can have.

Most shrimp won't tolerate living in the tank while it cycles.
If you want to speed up the cycling process, get a bottle of filter bacteria from the pet shop. Add a double dose to the tank every day for a week and then pour the remaining contents into the tank. Try to add the bacteria near the filter intake so it gets drawn into the filter where we want it.

Other things to help speed up the cycling process:
Keep temperature around 28C.
Increase aeration.
Keep ammonia level around 3ppm.
Keep pH around 7.0
Leave lid off aquarium while cycling.
Don't have light on while cycling unless you have live plants in the tank.

Hi! Thanks! Will check Chilli rasboras out! I'm not planning on a community tank, just a centerpiece fish or a small school of fish or a large school of small fish

Thank you!! I cannot get a bigger tank, but I will make sure to follow your cycling instructions! I will have plants in the tank while it cycles, so I will keep the light on.

THIS is a 10 gallon planted tank, (I was using it as a Quarantine Tank for 3 female Dwarf Gourami);

Now th ladies are in a bigger tank, I now have a healthy shoal of Chili Rasbora, with some shrimp and Sparkling Gourami.

I just got a 10 g as well and planned on stocking it with a bunch of chili rasboras! I read that you can put about 20 in a 10 g because they are so small! I wanted pea puffers but people on this forum said the tank would be too small

I heard that you can put 2 chili rasbora per gallon of water. SO for a 10 g tank you could have roughly 20 rasbora if it were a species-only tank.

No...as Essjay says, Dwarf Gourami are a different species (and significantly bigger) than Sparkling Gourami.
Just to confuse things a little, Sparkling Gourami and Croaking Gourami can both be referred to as 'Pygmy' Gourami.
I have 18 Chili Rasbora in with 3 different Nerite snails, a few shrimp and half a dozen Sparkling Gourami, (2 males and 4 females)...and, as you can see, a lot of plants.

I heard that you can put 2 chili rasbora per gallon of water. SO for a 10 g tank you could have roughly 20 rasbora if it were a species-only tank.

NOTE that these figures rarely take into account planting and good filtration, nor do they take into account water changes. (I change 8 litres on a fortnightly basis).

So a no to the pea puffers? I think that my freind is planning on buying them as the online “trustworthy“ shop says 10g is ok as does other sites.

you could put about 3 them in a 10g but they wouldn't be happy. They would fight each other a lot because of the lack of space. That would cause them to be stressed which can result in sickness and death.

Hi! Questions about honey / dwarf Gouramis.
How many dwarf could go in my tank?
How many honey?
Also, are “sunset honey gourami” much bigger than honey? Or the same thing?
