I've been looking around and have come across a 10 gallon complete with UG filter, heater, light, etc. for only $35 CAD. Unfortunately, the only place I have to put it is on my dresser, which is across from a window. The sun will not hit the aquarium directly because it comes in from an angle, but will there still be too much indirect sunlight? I don't mind doing some extra algae cleanup.

if you dont mind a little extra algea then it should be fine. Or you can get a small pleco of some kind.

My 10 gallon is setup in the living room which gets plenty of natural light and maybe 5-10 or so minutes of direct sunlight in the afternoon. No algae problems....yet lol. On the plus side, I don't have to have the aquarium light on much for the live plants, they get plenty of light.

no problems but get an external filter and get rid of the undergravel there hard to clean and don't do much in the filter media outlook on it. My tank is setup to that it gets most of the sunlight at summer in the evenings and my "Clean up crew" has a party.

Great- now I just need to convince my dad! I told him I'd get rid of the 4 gallon hex I got free, since it has scratches on the edges.

get an external filter
Do external filters fit on all aquariums? I mean, do all aquariums have a space under the hood where one can attach an external filter? :/

I wouldn't advise a plec for a tank that size as they cause a lot of waste themselves. Also, they are few plecs which actually eat algae their whole lives. I don't know of any species as such but individuals that have, but then other individuals of the same species haven't.

I would advise an algae scraper or magnet. Maybe even a snail, if you like them.

I have my 10 gallon almost right next to the window in my room. The window faces west so they get a bit of afternoon sun but I havn't had any problems with algae.

All of my tanks are either across from, next to, or near a window. In may apartment, it's kinda hard for them not to be. I have problems with brown algea and no one seems to know a way to get rid of it. Maybe the stuff that makes brown algea is in my water supply, so I can't get rid of it.

Anyway...there shouldn't be a problem.

I have an algae scraper that I use on my other tanks, and I think I'll get some otos, too. The ones I have now aren't big alage eaters, but they're so darn cute :p

I don't like having snails because last time I bought one, and it laid eggs and I had snails all over the tank  It's too much work trying to get rid of them!
