    Best substrate for cichlids

I prefer gravel with cichlids, especially large ones. 1. They like to dig, and gravel is great for that. 2. Gravel is easy to vacuum, cichlids are all messy fish 3. gravel is easy to repair after the fish decides to move ALL of it to one end of the tank, sand isn't so easy...though, I've...

    Why do you keep fish?

I like fish for many reasons. First I enjoy the challenge, why I like to keep difficult species, always something to tweak and fix, stuff you don't just mindlessly throw a wrench at, you actually have to figure it out, and then fix it. also why I like computers. A fishtank is like a computer...

    arowana diet

I'd recommend against live, live food is expensive, and when these guys get big, they can EAT, you'll spend a fortune every day trying to keep him fed. They'll eat anything that they can get in their mouth too, so you'd never be able to keep him with anything because they do get over 3 feet...

    please help

I've never tried salt in a planted tank :/ to afraid to. (I only actually use salt when I want to stop the infection NOW and can't get to the store 30 miles away!) For my planted tanks I use an Ich medicine containing malachite green, it's never hurt the plants, and stops the infection every...

    want to build my own

wow thanks :) i can lose the 4 inches...i like round numbers, but 96 is close enough. I won't be starting this anytime soon, I just spent a little more than $2500 of a 250 gallon tank, so no $$$ for starting just yet, but I like to research in advance.

    please help

raise the temp about 80F and about 2-3 tablespoons of non-iodized salt per 5 gallons of water works best. (check your species salt tolerances first)

    Possibly a fungus???

sounds like poor water quality to me. People who have city water often have large amounts of chlorine in it, which causes many of the symptoms you describe. There are products on the market that dechlorinate your water to make it safe for aquarium use, I unfortunately don't know anything about...

    Shes a mean one

Here's a method I've used with success to get cichlids to get along, especially with large agressive ones. (never tried it with smaller ones) If the female was in first, and is larger than the male, she will beat the crap out of him, so what I did was drop a tank divider right down the middle...

Green Terror & Red Devil?? What do ya think?

I keep 2 Red Devils and a Green Terror in my 120, they don't fight, probably because their both concentrating on being bigger than the arrowanas mouth :D I breed both species, and I've kept the young together in 55gallons of water, but when they mature, they don't get along.
