yea, didnt think for a day to remove the carbon though :-( so i guess first lot of treatment was wasted. Ill know next time. Tanks just not the same anymore without them, gonna get some more in a few months when i hope everything is perfect again.

all loaches gone, 6 months no worries, fine and playful one min, RIP next :(

sounds like what my uncles had in his! maybe its severn trent water supply? my uncle is in cheltenham, it filtered out in a few days, water changes made no difference! the filter was so gunked up with this crap aswell, looked like results of a bad cold but white!

Cheers for the info. We didnt wash the gravel though, but it took about 3 hours till it was in a tank with water in again, so i guess that woul have lost the bacteria. Are the level he has given above seem about right for a cycling tank?

no, before i used it, i washed it & washed it until i was sure it was proper clean.

yea, the gravel (80% or so) in his tank is from mine. as i had too much.

GH = 10 dh KH = 8 dh

the white stuf is floating & on the heater! Ill ring him a get him to test the gh & kh. BTW, you only see the white bits in the water when you look close.

Nah, the gravel was fine, washed, sived, washed, sived, stirred etc. I was worried by the powdery hard white stuff n the glass of the heater!

Ok, when you say dividers i.e. slate, you mean the tank it fully filled with water, just the base is divided? if i wanted to add sand in there, how would i get it to go where i wanted...any tip/tricks?

Cheers for that, im kinda thinking 2 more loaches will be too much, but i read such conflicting reports on the net about it! Cant remember the name, think it had L51 at the end though, 5-6" Black one with white dots all over it.

Is it a done thing to let nature take its route and let the fry just stay in the main tank with the other fish? Just wanna know if thats classed as cruelty or not? As i think ive got a few pregnant platties!

Another thing i think i benifitted from was when adding new water, leave it in the bucket for 30 mins or so with the dechlorinator working its magic. I figured chlorine is used in swimming pools to kill bacteria so it probably does that in the tank to, so the bigger the water change with...

I had this aswell, since gone to a bigger tank & used a product called 'Nita-zorb' or something, its a pouch that absorbs the bad stuff and has worked a treat.

Added a new Rock today so its moved round a little!
