All fish still alive the only thing I have noticed since is that another guppy (very similar to the one that died) has a little bit of tail damage. The end of the tail looks normal but there is a little split into the tail, looks like a clean split rather than fin rot, not sure how it happened...

The intake is strong (it's an external 1000L/hour filter) but they don't seem to have any problem with it even the fry can swim away from it. I would guess it's more likely that the dead fish would have drifted along in the current to the intake

Nitrate in the tank is fine in small quantities - most tap water has nitrate - it is the by-product of the nitrogen cycle. You should aim to keep Nitrate levels below 40ppm. Nitrite needs to be kept at 0ppm Ammonia needs to be kept at 0ppm

Do you test the water on a regular basis? If so what results do you get? Have a search for "old tank syndrome" see if that is applicable?

How long was it since your friend had the tank setup? Sounds like you've had some bad advice before coming here - but the above advice is excellent. It will be difficult to cycle a tank with that many fish in so I would guess that most will probably die unless you do a lot of water changes...

You don't need the cards after you've done a few tests, Ammonia and Nitrite are obvious without the test cards. Nitrate gives you a good idea without the cards - I do need the cards for pH though.

Mine aren't that big yet (mine are only 2 weeks) and all 6 of them now swim freely amongst the fish - the fish sometimes chase them but they never look like they are going to eat them. They even come to the surface at feeding time now too. So I would have thought your month old ones would be fine.
