    Platty Not Looking Well

Sponges were cleaned at the beginning of December in old tank water. I use a gravel vac and clean the gravel well each time, it's used to empty the 50% of water that I take out. The Nitrate level always rises, but that's to be expected as it's the result of the Nitrogen Cycle, I haven't taken...

    Platty Not Looking Well

Thanks for the reply, fish and tank size are all in my signiture. Haven't seen the fish go to the toilet at all. It's anus isn't inflamed and there are no worms. It doesn't seem to be eating and is now spending a lot of it's time on it's side at the bottom with the upper fin flicking about...

    Platty Not Looking Well

Just noticed that one of the female orange platties isn't looking well. It was down in the bottom corner next to the heater on the bottom looking slightly bent, it moves around every so often but swims in a strange way due to being bent. Then returns to the same corner everytime. She is also...

    Whoops - 1st Mistake

Fish are in my sig but it's guppies and plattys Fingers crossed - that's what I'd hope would happen! But the fish just haven't seemed interested in them. Glad I'm not the only one! Fish all seem fine and temp has got back up now - it was only a few degrees so probably not too bad (I could...

    Whoops - 1st Mistake

I was cleaning the gravel last night, and switched the heater off - just came to feed them tonight and I thought I'd move the plastic bush in the tank, and though oops that's cold! I'd forgotten to plug the heater back in - it had dropped to 21 degrees C. All the fish look fine and the 5 week...

Can Anyone Recommend A Good Fry Muncher?

Are rosy barbs OK with Guppies though? Already done a week or so ago - nobody has replied! It's under the livestock section - Free to anyone who can collect. Will look into them Thanks for what you would do - but not a lot of help here.

Can Anyone Recommend A Good Fry Muncher?

Yes it's a long tank so only 12" high and not suitable for angels, I also thought it was a little small for danios.

Can Anyone Recommend A Good Fry Muncher?

It appears I'm getting too many fry surviving in my community tank. I've only got female platy and only two of them but I'm getting about 6 new fry surviving every 3 weeks or so. I was hoping for only one maybe two surviving each drop, the fish just don't seem interested in eating the fry. Can...

Woke Up To A Dead Fish This Morning

All fish still alive the only thing I have noticed since is that another guppy (very similar to the one that died) has a little bit of tail damage. The end of the tail looks normal but there is a little split into the tail, looks like a clean split rather than fin rot, not sure how it happened...

Woke Up To A Dead Fish This Morning

All other fish are behaving normally and no signs of illness - all happy and no more deaths. Water stats still perfect so I'm hoping it was just a one off?

Woke Up To A Dead Fish This Morning

The intake is strong (it's an external 1000L/hour filter) but they don't seem to have any problem with it even the fry can swim away from it. I would guess it's more likely that the dead fish would have drifted along in the current to the intake

Woke Up To A Dead Fish This Morning

Had fish in my tanks now for 5 weeks with no problems, all seemed very healthy and I've also had fry during this time. My tank was properly cycled with a fishless cycle before hand. This morning one of my male guppies was stuck to the inlet strainer for the filter. I used the gravel vac to...

Can I Use Ordinary Flourescent Tubes In Tank?

    What Have I Done?

How often do you change water / clean the gravel? How much water do you change each time? If you are over feeding at the moment just clean up the excess with a gravel vac on a regular basis and your levels will be fine. You could do with setting the spare tank up, if you use a bit of the...

But you added that after I posted! If your stats are all like you say they are, then I'd be looking into OTS.

    What Have I Done?

Nitrate in the tank is fine in small quantities - most tap water has nitrate - it is the by-product of the nitrogen cycle. You should aim to keep Nitrate levels below 40ppm. Nitrite needs to be kept at 0ppm Ammonia needs to be kept at 0ppm

    What Have I Done?

Do you test the water on a regular basis? If so what results do you get? Have a search for "old tank syndrome" see if that is applicable?

    Orange Ball Under Female Platy

Well still not sure what it is, the orange ball has disappeared or burst and the remains are left hanging below the fish. She seems happy and is eating normally. Any more info on this?

    First Tank, Dying Mollies

How long was it since your friend had the tank setup? Sounds like you've had some bad advice before coming here - but the above advice is excellent. It will be difficult to cycle a tank with that many fish in so I would guess that most will probably die unless you do a lot of water changes...

    Orange Ball Under Female Platy

I've got a white female platy who I *think* gave birth approx 3 - 3.5 weeks ago. I was thinking that she hadn't got very fat this time with her pregnancy, then this morning when I went down I noticed she had a quite large orange ball underneath her with red bits on top. She seemed happy...

Platy Fry - Already! - Pictures Added

Now I've got more fry! From the colourings of the first ones, I think the first 2 were from my Wagtail Female and the following 4 came a few days later from my white female. I noticed yesterday that the males were following the wagtail female around non stop and she was looking fat and she had...

Lost Api Test Kit Instructions - How Many Drops

You don't need the cards after you've done a few tests, Ammonia and Nitrite are obvious without the test cards. Nitrate gives you a good idea without the cards - I do need the cards for pH though.

    Platys In Stoke-on-trent

Hi I'm leaving my fish to it in their community tank and was hoping that only a couple of fry at most survived each time, but I seem to be getting increasing numbers of fry quite quickly! I want to leave them in the tank until they reach a reasonable size but I will be getting over populated if...

The fish from Oak-hanger are normally good, I was in A-Z Aquatics the other day which isn't far from Oak Hanger and they had pandas (right hand side - second row I think) - looked healthy and I'm sure they weren't as much as £4 Hope that helps

    Baby Fry Q's

Most of your questions require more detail really: -will my fry be sucked up into the filter? if so how can i prevent it? What filter do you have? If it has holes on the inlet that are bigger than fry then yes otherwise no. Can be prevented with a pair of tights and an elastic band. -should...

    Sand And Filters

I think it comes from maintaining the filter and not having any problems for years with gravel, then they change to sand and the filter dies in a few weeks - heard of 3 people where this has happenend - of course it could be coincidence due to the filter being a few years old but I can see the...

    Sand And Filters

I wouldn't like to risk it myself, the parts around the impellor wear with normal use - this would be accelerated with any sand in the water. The floss should make sure very little sand gets past but I still don't like the thought of it! I know a few people who have worn out filters and blamed...

Tried to put molly fry in main tank

I think what they were trying to say is that 2cm away from an inch is very tiny. There are 2.54cm in an inch, so 2cm off an inch is only 0.54 cm which is tiny. DOH! Knew I'd reply to an old topic one of these days! - I blame the similar threads thing!

Just Put Month Old Platy Fry In Main Tank

Mine aren't that big yet (mine are only 2 weeks) and all 6 of them now swim freely amongst the fish - the fish sometimes chase them but they never look like they are going to eat them. They even come to the surface at feeding time now too. So I would have thought your month old ones would be fine.
