    DIY Skimmer

I don't fully understand how they work as i've never seen one for real, or seen one in operation. But from this picture, this basic model looks fairly easy to replicate. I am completely new to saltwater aquariums so am only just starting my research. Could someone please tell me where the...

    British marine tank???

I havent thought about this too much yet so it may be a ridiculous idea, and even illegal like catching/keeping freshwater fish. But just an idea, so does anyone have any comments on the feasibilty and legality of keeping a UK saltwater tank. My first concern would be that all the ones you see...

    DIY Undergravel Filter

Anyone?????? Please!!! When I was in my LFS today, they seemed to be using the same system, an Undergravel Filter without a powerhead, it was just a pipe coming up from the gravel to just below the surface, bubbling away. I asked if it was an airpump creating a vacumn effect that operated the...

    DIY Undergravel Filter

Having come across this link http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/filtersdi...22297diyugf.htm everything makes sense except for the airpump/airstones. Surely im missing something obvious but how do these work to suck the water through the filter, there is no mention in the article about using a...

    Newbie Newt Question

I am hoping to get newt or 2 for my coldwater fish tank, it is 80l but I would reduce the water lever a bit. In there at the moment is one 3-4" Ryukin (Fat fancy goldfish) and 6 pearl danios. I am going to go to my LFS tomorrow where I have seen newts for sale and hopefully get some good...

    Marine tanks in aquatic shops

From what I have seen, the marine tanks in my LFS seem much simpler than what everyone is discusing on here. Are these tanks only suitable for short-term holding or is there more to them than you can see. Most seem to be standard tanks with good lighting, a pump/filter and a slightly different...

    shiping fish to aquarium shows

That is what I meant, but that wasnt how it turned out!!! Had to stop 3 times to ring the towels out, had a pool of water in my passenger footwell!!! Everything survived though, and has been happily settled in it's new home for 2 weeks now. If I move again I think bagging will be the better...

    Emptying tank to move house

Thanks all for the advice. The fish were moved successfully, all the fish survived, but I did have to stop twice to rinse the towels and pools of water out of my passenger side footwell! lol. My first tank, 1 hour old!

Ammonia level is 0, Nitrite level 0.1mg (that one away from 0, on my colour scale) Still checking the levels daily, don;t have a NitrAte test, is this necessary? Nutrafin Cycle, is a biological supplement of beneficial bacteria. THe directions say it can be used weekly and it is impossible to...

    gravel vaccums

Dont be soft, a bit of fish water aint gonna kill ya if it doesnt kill a tiny fish! lol I havent tried my gravel pump yet, it is the most basic suck-it-yourself syphon type. The pipe is long enough that u shouldn't get any water in your mouth, but i'm into fire-breathing so I often fill my...

My first tank, 1 hour old!

Been a few days now, ammonia levels are fine, nitrites are up to 0.1mg but thats acceptable according to my chart. And i've positioned the powerhead so it is the right way around and working with the undergravel filter bed! Fish are looking good, just looking now to add some very small...

What is a Hoffmann 350 Silent Air???

found a small instruction sheet in the bottom of the box, beneath the polystyrene holder!!! It is an air pump, not a submersible filter. I'm happy thats all sorted! and glad I didnt try it in the bath! it really didn't look to be submersible. Matt

Had the water in there for a week with filter and pumps running quite a lot. treat water with Aqua Plus tap water treatment and added some Stress Zyme live bacteria too. Not using a heater, but the room generally is always warm. Now going to just have the larger fish for a week at least...

A fish got stuck to my filter :(

The fish are fine around the filter, it was just the occasion when 1 fish swam right across the inlet belly touching. I think it is part of an undergravel filter system, I have the undergravel bed in the tank also but couldnt see exactly how the 2 went together. may try making a rounded head...
