Sorry to hear about your fish I have lost a whole tank like that as well. As a matter of fact i bought a tank today that was sold because the heater went bad.

The good bacteria in your filtration system is in the canister, intake pipe and on the walls of your filter. your better off replacing the filter every 3-4 weeks because the active carbon needs to be replaced about that often and the pads get bad quick.

I say if you have the filter use it the fish will not die do 2 too clean of water. Also I woud suggest no more that 15 days between that kind of water change. That much water can change the balance of water quite a bit and will be a downside in the long run. Longer and longer to cycle.

I have found that guppies breed way to much and that my 29 gallon-127 litre tank is not nearly enough to keep up with these breeders. although my second brood gave me these crooked gems.

It does happen and should clear it self up as long as you keep to the cycling process.
