Replaced A Burnt Out Light Bulb. Did I Get The Wrong Wattage?

The hood can handle up to 50W. I originally bought some 40W bulbs then realized this and got some 25W bulbs soon afterwards. So running 50W total shouldn't over tax the electricals. Also in the posts regarding lighting, does the watt per gallon refer to the wattage of the flourescent or the...

Replaced A Burnt Out Light Bulb. Did I Get The Wrong Wattage?

10G Tank uses incandesent lighting. It came in a starter kit with 2 15W bulbs. 1 bulb burned out, and I replaced both with 25W bulbs. This yields 5W per gallon. I checked out some lighting topics and most are recommending 2-3W per gallon. I do plan on adding plants to the tank, but in the...

Tank Has Cycled And Thinking Of Upgrading The Filter

Hurray!!! I finally tested the tank and Ammonia and Nitrite were both 0 and the Nitrates were at 10 ppm. :hyper: The filter I'm using is what came with the starter kit. A Tetra Power Filter rated for a 5-15g tank. I'm considering geting a Penguin BioWheel with a 100g per hour flow. My...

Will A Betta Be Ok Without The Undergravel Filter Running For A Few Da

I think the cat was chasing the betta around the tank and got caught between the air tube hose and tank. Undergravel tray has been pulled up and I'm probably going to have to set the tank up again. I won't be able to get to the store for a few days, and I was wondering if I can leave the...

    A Good Size For A Quarantine/hospital Tank

I never expected that getting a 2.5G tank and a betta would spark such an interest in fish keeping. To be honest, I got that tank to function as a television for my cat. :hyper: That was one month ago. I've bought a 10G, and in true new tank syndrome fashion, put fish in it before it had...

Why Am I Still Not Seeing Any Nitrite?

I've been testing the water daily for over a week now. The fish have been in there for two weeks. I have been changing the water daily for the last week. I am using dechlorinator. Water temp stays steady at 80 degrees F. All fish are still alive, and I've cut back on feeding them. I am...

Waiting The 5 Minutes For Ammonia, Nitrite, And Nitrate Tests

When testing the water, sometimes I wait longer than 5 minutes to take the reading. Does this affect the validity of my reading? I am using the API Freshwater Master Test Kit. Same question goes for the pH tests. If I don't take the reading immediately, can the colors change if I wait too long?

    Decided To Track My Stats

For the first time, the ammonia in the 10G tank tested 0!!!! :) I didn't change the water yesterday, so I only tested several hours after today's 3G water change. Tonight's results pH: 7.5 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: didn't test. I found it a little odd that both the ammonia and the...

    Decided To Track My Stats

Not much different today. pH: back to 7.5 NH: .5 NO2/NO3: 0 Did a 3.5G water change. Haven't retested. Really tired tonight. I am getting quicker at changing the water and filling the test tubes. I'm trying to create a tank cycling mantra in hopes that it will speed the process along. :)...

    Decided To Track My Stats

I've been feeding the 10G TetraMin Fish flakes twice a day, and on Sunday and Wednesday, I toss in an algae disc for the otocinclus. This feeding regimen was recommended to me by the lfs. However, from my recent other posts, I have begun questioning everything they tell me. Especially when...

    Decided To Track My Stats

Did a water change today of both tanks, and got some surprising results. :hyper: and yes I waiting over an hour before retesting the waters 10G Before pH: 7.5 NH: b/t .25 and .5 NO2 & NO3: 0 After a 3.25G water change pH: 6.8 NH: <.25 and the closest I've ever seen it to 0 since I started...

    Decided To Track My Stats

Today's Stats: pH: 7.5 ammonia: .5 NO2: 0 NO3: 0 Bought a 4G bucket today, and will change out at least 3G of water. There are faint marks inside that let me know when the water level has reached 1, 2, 3, and 4G. It measures in L on the other side - up to 15L. Would it be dangerous to the...

    Decided To Track My Stats

Tank and Tap results: 10G Tank Results pH: 7.5 ammonia: between .25 and .5 NO2: 0 NO3: 0 After testing, I changed out 2G of tank water. Figured that should atleast be 25% given the water displacement of the gravel, rocks, heater, and fake plants. Tap Results pH: 6.8 ammonia: 0 NO2: 0 NO3: 0

    Decided To Track My Stats

Ok, took Laura's advice I also asked the wife for some stockings that had a run or hole in them. Not exactly sure where I should place the borrowed gravel, I hung one foot? next to the intake slots of the filter, and I put the other foot in the filter where the water first collects before it...

    Decided To Track My Stats

I've got 2 tanks, several numbers and lots of questions. After mixed advice from my lfs and greater consensus among the posters here and elsewhere, I decided to buy an API Master Test Kit because those 5-in-1 test strips were too difficult to decipher. As I'm still VERY new to this, I figured...

Questioning More Advice From The Lfs

After my recent post, I decided to put some more lfs advice to the scrutiny of my fellow TFF posters. 1) When I bought my glofish from them to use as starter fish, they also recommended I buy a Buffer-Up Conditioner (Sodium Bicarbonate, hmm now that I'm reading the sole ingredient, could I have...

Did My Lfs Give Me Good Advice?

I've done 2 weekly 25% water changes, and I'm testing for Ammonia on Sundays and Wednesdays. Is that regular enough? I will be doing another water change today after these responses. Damn greedy fish store.

Did My Lfs Give Me Good Advice?

Wow, that was a fast response. Tank is still fairly new. Set it up on Friday, Sep 12, added the danios on Wed, Sep 17, and the HSBD Guarami and Otocinclus on Sunday, Sep 21. Bought some algae discs when I got the otocinclus to make sure he had some algae to eat, and the guarami likes them too.

Did My Lfs Give Me Good Advice?

During my last trip to the lfs (and this is a store that only sells fish and fish keeping equipment), I bought an otocinclus. I mentioned that I wanted to get my algae eater a little early to prevent future algae problems rather than wait for them to occur. I also said that I didn't want to...
