    Convicts With My Jack Dempsey?

Yeah, I've realize that convicts would most likely become too aggressive. Firemouths on the other hand, totally slipped mind :D

At this point I'm going to assume the fish has died. :( How long did you acclimate him for? Sounds like it could very well be pH shock.

How come no one has suggested a betta? Shrimp would be cool...wouldn't recommend any tetras or more than 1 or 2 guppies or danio's.

Actually Putting New Fish In A Tank

Although recommended in basically all situations, for freshwater tanks a quarantine tank is really a necessity as it is in saltwater tanks. Mainly meaning extensive reefs, where thousands of dollars have been spent and introducing an infected fish could be devastating. I have never quarantined...

20 Gallon Long Tank... 4 Corys... What's Next?

Personally, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like your new to the hobby. This being said, IMHO I would not recommend for you to get German rams. Although beautiful and great fish, they tend to be very fussy when it comes to water condtions and changes in conditions. I've lost a few...

    Convicts With My Jack Dempsey?

Hey guys, A few weeks ago I put a EBJD in my 37g tank. I'd say he is around 1.75" right now and is with some cory's. I'm gonna be taking down my 37 and getting a 55. Was wondering if I could keep convicts with my JD. Or if anything else would be good with him. Some sort of oddball...

First Marine Tank - Journal W/ Pics

So I started my 30gallon FOWLR tank and I'm currently adjusting the salinity of the water right now it's at 1.021 and I'm aiming for 1.025 right? I'm going to be getting live rock probably tomorrow, should I be putting it straight on the glass or on top of the sand? Also the top cover piece on...

Recommend A Hob Skimmer For 30g Fowlr?

Again thanks for the responses. I've also heard good things about the CPR BakPak 2...anyone have experience with these? I mean I'm definitely glad I didn't order the SeaClone. Gonna go look up the AquaC and Tunze.

    Ugh! Such Bad Advice!

Although, I do have a few great LFS, there is still many chains around. My first tank I bought was a 29g starter kit...it came with $15 credit for fish with the store. Not knowing too much at that time, I asked for some good community fish. Lets just say I came home with 2 iridescent sharks. :/

    Hows This List?

As far as I've read they will only fight with similar species. As for the aquaclears, I have them lying around, figured I'd run atleast one with like 2 sponges or something. And as for the Koralias I originally was gonna get two, I guess I will now. I just thought that might be adequate with...

    Hows This List?

So after quite a bit of research, I'm going to hold off on setting up a 40g reef. Considering I've never kept a marine tank before I'm gonna set up a 30g fowlr, to get my feet wet a bit before going for a full-blown reef. Here's the plan: 30g long tank; 2 aquaclear 30's; SeaClone 100...

Recommend A Hob Skimmer For 30g Fowlr?

Hi, I'm setting up my first marine tank probably within this week. It is a 30g long. Going to be running 2 aquaclear 30's for mechanical, and adding about 35lbs live rock, give or take a few lbs. I know it's not necessary at first, but I definitely want to skim. I'm considering the Prizm...

Freshwater Master Test Kit -vs- Saltwater Master Test Kit

I was just wondering what the difference might have been between say the API freshwater/saltwater master test kits. I'm just wondering because I'm setting up my first marine tank and was wondering if I needed different tests. Thanks.

    Possibilities For A 20g?

Thanks for all the responses. Although I love rams myself, I have one in my 37g and I'd like to do something different. I'm definitely going to have to research cockatoo cichlids, they seem quite beautiful. Btw, by 20L I meant 20 gallon long.

    Possibilities For A 20g?

Hi, I'm considering setting up a 20L tank. I was wondering which NW cichlids I could stock in this. I know it would have to be kept at a low number, but any suggestions would be nice. I know 30g is a much better choice, not sure if I want to put a 30 where I'm planning to put this tank.

    Need Help On Filter

Not experienced with that filter in particular, but I would break it down slowly and then put it back together. Make sure all peices are locked into their slots, and the impeller is positioned correctly. Prime it with water and plug it in, and just keep adding water slowly until all the air...

    Betta Prolapsed Gills?

Hi, In anticipation of setting up my 40g reef tank, I wanted to set something small up for the time being while I collect the various parts and research the marine world. So, I set up a 5.5g and added a male crown betta today. It looks like his gills are sticking out a bit, more before but...

Blue Ram Not Doing So Well..

Despite the help you graciously gave Wilder, I'm afraid my reaction time wasn't prompt enough. She did end up dying a short while ago, and I can only hope the male is doing fine. Blue Ram Not Doing So Well..

Ammonia 0; Nitrite 0; Nitrate <15ppm. Not sure of the exact ph from the store, I'm pretty sure right around 6.8 though. Acclimated for at least an hour. Bloated as of I'd say a few hours ago. Like I said this morning she was swimming around, definitely not bloated.

Blue Ram Not Doing So Well..

Yesterday I added a pair of German Blue rams to my community tank. The male seems fine and as of this morning the female was swimming actively as well. Now she is just sort of lying on the bottom, breathing rather hard, and if you ask me I'd say she looks bloated. I think she might be...

    Marine Stocking And Setup Advice

After receiving a 40gal. (36"x18"x16") from my friend, after months of wanting to setup a new tank, finally ready to. After much research, I have decided 100% to go marine. Not Brand New, Need Some Guidance Though.

I suppose your right about the green terrors, and no I wasn't planning on getting a common plec. What about keeping convicts with the firemouths. I mean considering this tank if pretty deep, I really plan on going for some real depth with some rock caves and live plants. Will these cichlid be...

Hello Happy Holidays to all, It's been maybe almost a year since I setup my first tank, a 29 gal. freshwater. Naturally went through a bit of trial and error, but fortunately found the internet and these forums before I made any serious mistakes like many new fish keepers do. Anyway...

    Fish Tank Settings

Ammonia and nitrites should always be as close to 0 as possible. As far as nitrates <30 is acceptable. If ammonia and nitrites are over .25ppm you should do 25-30% water changes daily to keep the toxins down while your biological filter builds.
