As al have said the bigger the water volume the better this doesnt have to be all in the main tank though you could have a 50gal show tank then 150 gal in sumps etc. IMO the biggest you want to go as a beginner is 100gal generally because in the uk im not sure where you are the cost increases...

I have found that a cheaper place to fet rocks from is a builders yard or garden center you would still need to take the same precautions ie boil and test for lime, but builders merchants dont generally do anything to rocks in the way of chemicals etc

Again while i havent kept a trigger of any kind i am only speaking from what i have read, Triggers are shy fish try turning the lights out this will help reduce stress, You will need a bigger tank in the long run you may even find the small tank size is contibuting to the stress level
