Heat Loss From Open Top Tank

OK so the general consensus seems to be that the heater will be on longer but do you think that's more to do with the lights (which generate radiant heat) being much further away from the water than before? Anyone seen any concrete data on open vs closed lids? I have a nice piece of toughened...

Heat Loss From Open Top Tank

Hey guys My light unit recently gave up and I'm thinking of going open topped with suspended lights. Is there a significantly larger heat loss vs keeping a lid on? Matt

    Lightwave T5 Unit For Aquarium?

Does anyone know if the Lightwave t5 units are suitable for use over an aquarium and if I'd need to switch out the tubes? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lightwave-T5-24-watt/dp/B003Y7F6NM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319210801&sr=8-2 Also, are they compatible with any t5 tubes or just some brand specific...

    Kribensis Cichlid Problem

Kribs can be very territorial when they aren't an active pair, how big is your tank and what sort of plants/ornaments do you have in there? Have you given the Kribs adequate places to hide from each other?

    Pond Filter For Aquarium

So I've recently done a bit of a test on my external filter which is attached to my Juwel Rio 400. It's an Aquael Unimax 700 rated at 1700LPH. I've figured out that it's only really pushing around 850LPH even after being cleaned. I'm thinking of switching over to live plants and even with my...

    Snail Problem Update

Cheers for the advice, I'll try and find some at the local fish place. In the meantime I'll try and give some more details on my Acara. He is sitting on the bottom of the tank, gills going like mad and he seems unable to move very far, it's like he's stuck on the bottom of the tank. I have...

    Snail Problem Update

o...k thanks for the advice, I think :/ Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle, it wouldn't turn back into Nitrite as that's what got broken down to create the nitrate in the first place. I have sand, not gravel so no hidden waste there at least. Never heard of anyone needing RO...

    My Rocks Have Green Hair!

    Micro Snails In Tank

Hmm, I haven't added any plants since the tank was set up about 6 months ago, it's only in the last few days that I've actually seen them. I'll see how it goes over the next week or so (hopefully the snails won't get too big) and feed only once ever other day or so. Thanks for your help, I'll...

    Micro Snails In Tank

Thanks I'll look into it, is my plec likely to eat them? All the other fish have had a go and simply spat them back out :( Attached is a picture of one such creature although there's at least 50 I reckon that I can see at a glance.

    Micro Snails In Tank

Hi I seem to have a lot of micro snails all over my tank, they weren't there a few days ago and now seem to be all over everything. I will get a picture attached when my bluetooth works but they are around 3mm across and fairly see through, does anyone know how I can get rid of them? The only...

    Kribensis?

Kribs are awesome fish, watching them change colour in a snap never gets old, very entertaining watching them interact with each other as they don't tend to turn when going small distances, they just kinda swim sideways or backwards to get where they are trying to go  Two of mine...

300W Heater Not Enough Or Not Working Properly?

OK if I've got the same problem as you then screw it the #41#### thing's going back and I'm just going to go and buy an element from a kettle and attach a reliable thermometer to it . Well not really but I might just ditch both heaters in favour of a couple of Rena Smart heaters, how...

300W Heater Not Enough Or Not Working Properly?

Yeah I've stuck it into a bowl of water for about an hour and it seems to be heating that up without too much trouble, guess I'm just gonna have to stump up the cash for a second heater. In other "my Rio 400" related news, I've just put two new tubes in after only running on one tube since the...

300W Heater Not Enough Or Not Working Properly?

The temp was set at 26 but I've set it to 28 to no avail. The E series doesn't have an led on it  just the LCD displaying the temperature. The ambient temp is now 19.8 and the tank temp has only risen half a degree  so I'll put the old heater back in and try setting the...

300W Heater Not Enough Or Not Working Properly?

Hi Guys I've just replaced the old heater I had that was heating my Rio 400 as I finally had the funds. I left it this long because it was somehow doing a decent job of keeping the temp around 26 degrees. I have replaced it with a 300W Fluval E Series which seems to be incapable of heating the...

Fish In Cycle Without Water Changes?

Fish In Cycle Without Water Changes?

How To Reduce The Noise A Filter Makes

Agitating, disturbing, creating ripples etc all the same thing. Ripples increase the surface area which increases oxygen exchange (iirc). Just so the surface of the water isn't still.

    Tetra Tec Gs45 Glass Scraper

How To Reduce The Noise A Filter Makes

You should have it 1-2cm below the waterline. This way it will agitate the surface but not create splashes.

How To Reduce The Noise A Filter Makes

Yep got to agree there but instead of taking the pipe off, first see if there's a dial on the end of it to close the valve which will have much the same effect as taking it off but allow you to open it again if need be.

I improved flow at the bottom of my tank by buying the smallest, crappiest filter and up ending it near the bottom of the tank, cost about 6 quid and it's extra filtration too.

Agreed, totally. I have a mate who is a "knows best" kind of bloke and nothing I say gets through to him because "he's done it before and it worked." Of course he only did it for a year and the fish were nowhere near fully grown. I say leave him to it and when the fish do kick the bucket he...
