A light is not a nessisary part of an aquarium, unless you want to be able to view your fish well, or if you have live plants. You will probably want a light later though, when you get some more money, you should consider buying one if you want to watch your fish clearly.

How do you upgrade a power filter? ????

I have have a standard power filter for my 10 gallon tank, and I was wondering if I bought an undergravel filter, if I could squeeze say 1 inch per .75 gallons of fish? Will it make my gravel dirty really fast, or is it really reduce ammonia and nitrite substantially?

My platy is about to give birth in the next few days, so I might have this experience soon!

Could I keep mollies with tetra, or a better question might be what common fish cannot be kept in slightly brakish water? I really want mollies and gold skirt tetra together, and I might add some other fish in there too.

It needs water conditioner if you didn't put anything in it. It will help eliminate heavy metals like the copper in many people's pipes, and the chlorine, and chloromine that water companies use to disinfect. But if your water provider used chlorine instead of chloramines, then you should be ok...

She doesn't seem that big... I guess my platy is just always pregnant so I don't know if yours if huge. My guess is that she is pregnant. She could have stored the sperm for that long, or, like Denil said, maybe if you have swordtails, they could be getting her pregnant.

I am considering a new 20 gallon tank, and I was looking at Petsmart for potential fish to get for my tank. I noticed that they had angel fish in different sizes. Are these different kinds of fish, or are they just at a younger age? If they are just younger, then I guess I won't get any angels.

Would it be ok to stock 3 mollies, 3 platies, 4 small chichilids, 3 small angel fish, and 4 gold skirt tetra in a 20 gal?

One of my neons is really swollen, so I am going 2 feed a cooked pea 2 see if it is constipation. This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you feed a pea to fish? :blush: When I put a whole pea in, it sank & they ignored it. :/

I have had the shells in my tank ever since I got it, so I think that my fish are used to the hard water now. I have had my tank for 10 months, and only one neon, and two guppies have died, and the neon died from an unknown parasite. I probably wouldn't have put the shells in my tank now, but...

Maybe she has a nitrate filter, or in some part of her tank the conditions are just right to harbor the anerobic bacteria that consume nitrate.

Maybe, you should be worried if the guppies are smaller than the molly fry's mouths, but at three weeks, I find it very unlikely that they will be big enough to eat newborn fry. So my guess is that it would be safe! :good:

Wow... Thats alot of water changes...:S I don't use test kits. I just do two 10% water changes a week to keep the nitrates down.

Sorry :( I tried to pour them into a cup, but the water drained out of the breeder too fast, so I couldn't get them out fast enough. I tried to syphon the bottom with an airline tube, but it wasn't getting any waste, and I accidentally sucked up a fry. :/ I can't try the turkey baster thing...
