    colonizing a bio-wheel 150

i moved last week, and the tank is crystal clear still. So, if you're wondering how long it takes for a bio wheel to be viable in a cycled, filtering tank, go with 4 days at the most running the new bio wheel filter and whatever old filter you have.

    colonizing a bio-wheel 150

Well, i took off the magnum 350 this morning, and the tank is still crystal clear. I'm hoping the bio wheel is cycled enough to get it through this first week. Between the bio wheel running since saturday, the rest of the tank being cycled and healthy, and having hearty fish in the tank, i...

    colonizing a bio-wheel 150

thank you... i'm probably only going to let it run till i have to move the tank this weekend, then i'm going to remove the canister. it is in dire need of a cleaning, and i'm simply going to remove it, clean it up, and store it before i move. If i notice that in a week the tank is getting...

    colonizing a bio-wheel 150

Anyone?? I'm just wondering how long it will take the penguin 150 to become sufficiently cycled with the rest of the tank so i can remove my magnum 350. 1 day? 5 days? 5 weeks?

    colonizing a bio-wheel 150

Here's my setup right now: 10 gallon tank 10 zebra daneo 4 tiger barbs magnum 350 canister filter (yeah yeah, its OVERKILL, but it was given to me so i use it) Anyhow, I've had the magnum for about 2 years, it works great, and its obviously colonized with bateria. The water is crystal clear...

    Black Mollie deaths

I had 3 black mollies in my tank, and recently the last one has died. In all cases, right about before their death, their gills would get white around the bottom, and their anuses would turn white. Is this generally what black mollies look like when they die, or is this a sign of disease? By...

    Are canister filters better

one more thing about my magnum... From what i've noticed, you have to really place the canister on the base just right, or the impeller will vibrate and be annoying. Also, the base gives off a little bit of heat, so i've had to slightly adjust my heater.

    Are canister filters better

I have been running a magnum 350 for about a month now, which replaced my aquaclear 300. In the first hour of opperation, my tank was crystal clear... something that it had never been while using the AC. i've yet to open the thing up, because its running just fine... although today is...

    decomposing fish

I did notice that my pleco was quite a bit larger than when i left him last weekend. That's probably where the mollie went. The other one was floating though, so who knows. I set up my webcam on my tank, but because of router problems, i couldn't access my computer remotely to look at the...

    decomposing fish

i went on vacation for a week. i had 3 black mollies, but when i came home, i had one living and one floating and half decomposed. The third is unaccounted for. I've checked everywhere in the tank. My question is, how long would it take for a black molly to completely decompose to its...

humane ways to kill sick fish

That's an ironic statement... Like pro life advocates who snipe abortion doctors, or animal rights people who wear leather shoes. Go to the pinned euthanasia thread.

    After your advice earlier...

For those of you who want my running diary of my new magnum, let me tell you, my tank is CRYSTAL clear! I didn't realize that my decorations were supposed to reflect off of the walls. They are now. With that being said, i took out the micron filter and put in the basket full of carbon. I...

    After your advice earlier...

sorry about the guy thing... I do have a question. When i have the valves open fully, the intake sounds like its sorta rushing air and water. How do i get rid of ALL the air in the thing so it doesn't make that noise?? do i just have to wait a few hours for it to do its thing, or do i shake...

    After your advice earlier...

Thanks man... I'm going to run the micron filter tonight and do a gravel vaccuum with the attachment. I do have enough bacteria on my decorations/gravel to sustain me while i get rid of my aquaclear. Ok, happy cleaning for me now!

    After your advice earlier...

Its the deluxe version which includes the quick release valves and the gravel siphone, which connects to the intake of the magnum. This is for my 30 gallon cycled tank currently... When i get a big huge tank (i measured and i have 6'x4' worth of cement floored room to work with) i'll be moving...

    Filter options for new tank

Don't know how i'm buying it yet. I want to sort out which one is the absolute best. Actually getting it is almost a secondary thing right now.

    Filter options for new tank

I've got a section of my family room that is undecorated. I can fit at least a 75 gallon tank there, so i need some options on the filtration. I am very unclear as to the fish i'd put into it, so i'm just going to assume that i'll pick those who give off a tremendous amount of waste, as...

    Aquaclear Question

after 2 weeks, it works well. ALMOST (not totally) crystal clear, and great water chemistry, so its doing a great mechanical job and biological job.

    Aquaclear Question

of course, if it doesn't work, i'll be mad enough to go spend the cash on the magnum350 with the bio wheel. That should be good enough to filter just about anything.

    Aquaclear Question

That's the thing... Its been cycled and running fine for almost 9 months now. The fish are fine and the water chemistry is normal. I do my weekly water changes. However, tomorrow, (to answer your question inchworm), i'm going to remove the old spone, as the new sponge should be colonized...

    Aquaclear Question

This is what i posted on the hardware section, but got no replies, so i'll try here: "I have an AC 300 with my 30 gallon tank... For the past month or so, the tank has been sorta cloudy, like there's a bacterial bloom. However, params all read zero, so i'm now starting to wonder if its the...

I have an AC 300 with my 30 gallon tank... For the past month or so, the tank has been sorta cloudy, like there's a bacterial bloom. However, params all read zero, so i'm now starting to wonder if its the sponge in my aquaclear that's actually disinegrating into the tank. Its about 9 months...

    Black mollies

Ok, i'll look into that... I've still gotta make sure i have 2 and 2 since i just did a quick glance at the tank when you mentioned how to tell the difference. In any event, keeping these fish is fun.

    Black mollies

oh yeah, my tank is heavy in decorations and plastic and fabric plants. No live plants, but i've got a great fake fern thing that provides ample cover for the fry.

    Black mollies

Well, i'm going to use darwinism here... IF they survive, great... they'll be strong fish. if not, then it was nature's way. I didn't realize that they were livebearers though... i'll have to keep an eye out for that. i've got 2 males and 2 females by the way... I haven't seen any...

    Black mollies

I've got 4 black mollies. I can't really tell the sex of them since i don't have a clue about black mollies. Anyways, the day after i got them, one gave birth... I didn't see it lay the eggs, but there were about 20-30 babies in the tank later in the day. Now, there seems to be another batch...

    black molly babies

I added a very slight amount of salt, because i also have a pleco. He doesn't seem to be affected by the salt though, but he's pretty much full grown, so i figure he can handle a little bit. There's only about a dozen in the filter, about half of which were still alive. I got them out. I...

    black molly babies

I purchased 4 black mollies on tuesday. By wednesday, i noticed that one had given birth as there were about 6 baby fish swimming around. Today there's like 20 in there, plus some dead ones in the filter. Couple questions... Will they eat regular tropical flakes if i break them up? Will...

    tank incident

I've got a 10 gallon tank that's stocked with zebra danio (6 of them) and one pleco. It's heavily decorated with fake plants and has an aquaclear 300 on it for filtration. I had a cichlid in there till he recently jumped the tank and died. Now it's stocked with the daneo. Anyways, its been...

    New tank

I love my AC on my 10 gallon tank. I think i've spent a grand total of $5 on it since i bought the thing. Its a wonderful filter. The only reason why i'm enamoured with the magnum is that i'd be having this big tank in the living room, and noise cannot be a factor, which it is with a HOB filter.

    Filters???

I'm planning on getting the magnum 350 with the bio wheel attachment when i get my 75 gallon tank. I only have a 10 gallon now currently. I've read nothing but good things about the magnum. The only thing i'm leary of is assembling the intake and exhaust pipes. I don't really know if i have...

    New tank

Thanks man... the bio wheel with the canister seems really attractive to me at the moment. If only aquaclear had a built in bio wheel. I love the thick sponge and the big carbon bag of the AC as opposed to the floss, small carbon of the emperor/penguin series.
  39. C

    Removing nitrate

You can get a gravel siphon for like $5. That and the cost of water for regular water changes is way cheaper than any new filtration system or chemicals to remove stuff from your water. Sorry, but sumps/algae tanks/carbon bags/etc. seem like a waste when all you need is a hose, bathtub and bucket.

    New tank

I'm planning on getting a 50-75 gallon tank this weekend. For filtration, should i go with an aquaclear 500, and/or the emperor 400, or the magnum 350 canister with biowheel. I'm really leaning towards the last one, but i know very little about the setup of a canister filter. Any...
