I've got 4 black mollies. I can't really tell the sex of them since i don't have a clue about black mollies. Anyways, the day after i got them, one gave birth... I didn't see it lay the eggs, but there were about 20-30 babies in the tank later in the day. Now, there seems to be another batch today... What gives?? Is my tank really that sexy that they need to reproduce every other day, or was i given a batch of pregnant fish, or is this new round simply slower developing eggs from that original clutch? Help me... i'm really sick of "fishing" out dead and live fry from my aquaclear.

Mollies are livebearers and so they would not lay eggs.

The easiest way to tell the sex is but the anal fin (I think it's that one), the single fin underneath anway. With the males it's thin and against the body and with females it's a 'V' or triangle.

Hope I have described this well enough.

You might want to seperate the fry as mollies will eat their young. Some can survive in a well planted aquarium.

Well, i'm going to use darwinism here... IF they survive, great... they'll be strong fish. if not, then it was nature's way. I didn't realize that they were livebearers though... i'll have to keep an eye out for that. i've got 2 males and 2 females by the way... I haven't seen any agressive behavior yet, so who knows.

oh yeah, my tank is heavy in decorations and plastic and fabric plants. No live plants, but i've got a great fake fern thing that provides ample cover for the fry.

You might want to get a couple more females are take back a male because it's normal to have 2 females to every male to minimise the hassle on the females.

:)

Ok, i'll look into that... I've still gotta make sure i have 2 and 2 since i just did a quick glance at the tank when you mentioned how to tell the difference. In any event, keeping these fish is fun.

LOL I am glad you think so!!

Oh with black mollies make sure you don't clean at least the back wall from algae as it's vital for mollies to eat it.

Ok... i did notice that they loved the algae tablet i dropped in for my pleco.
It's not that they are algae eaters as such, they would never eat it enough for it to be gone. Make sure you feed them other food such as flakes, bloodworm etc for them to be healthy and active. :hey:

The males have a gonopodium, which forms a tube by it's anal fin, basically, like a penis.

Mollies and guppies are very prolific, so if you have males and females, expect more fry :D

Mollies eat anything and everything.
