    James Squires Planted 30 Gallon

Quick photo update guys, I've shuffled a few things around, trimmed a few plants and let things grow a bit wild again. Here's the messy result in need of some maintanance again: Cheers, JS

    My Latest Diy Project

Alright... Here's the pics: Notice that as a precautionary measure the water pump is mounted a little over an inch off the bottom of the tank in case the pump runs too fast. This way there will always be water left in the tank for the fry even if the syphon is blocked. Here's one of the...

    My Latest Diy Project

Hi all, I thought I might share with you all my latest DIY project. My new fry tank. Background: My Bristlenose Plec recently gave birth to 29 little wigglers. They have since been living in my floating breeder trap which they were soon to grow out of. Hence the requirement for a fry tank...

    My Kribs Are Makin' Babies!

Hi Dirtyfishtank, Unfortunately those eggs were eaten. It appears to be a common first time parenting thing! It's all good though because as of yesterday they are now guarding a cave with the second batch of eggs. With a bit of luck they should get it right this time! Crossed fingers, JS

    Guppies And Kribs?

There you have it! Works for some, not for others! My pair are guarding eggs right now and still no probs, the BN plecs are the only ones that seem to be bothering them! The guppy's flutter around the top half of the tank and don't concern the Kribs at all! My tank is 3ft long and holds 30...

    Guppies And Kribs?

I think this is one of those questions that could go either way. The Kribs might bother, hurt or kill some of the Guppies but then they might not. Depending on how happy and comfortable they are in their new environment. If you can provide lots of plants, caves and hiding places for them then I...

Just Looked Into One Of My Fry Tanks

Sorry if im hijacking but... I found this thing in my tank the other day and another one in my filter. I tried to take a photo but my camera isn't good enough... Is this a dragonfly larvae? If so how did it get in my tank? Should I be concerned? Cheers, JS

    Bolivian Ram: Male Or Female?

Thankyou everyone. I was thinking male too. Only thing that had me thrown was the length of the spikes. The fin extensions certainly suggest he's a he. Good to have confirmation as I can now go in search of a 'missus' for my little guy! Cheers, JS PS> Captain, I can confirm 'he' does have...

    Bolivian Ram: Male Or Female?

Hi guys, I tried and tried to avoid starting another of these threads but I can't sex my Bolivian Ram confidently regardless of how much I read! So here goes! The tail has extensions to it but the 3rd and 4th spikes on (his?) head aren't much longer at all than the other spikes? I think male...

    My Kribs Are Makin' Babies!

Hi all, Last night I came home from work to find my male Krib all flared up with his colours darkened, he was hovering around the middle depths of the tank staying pretty still. Here he is as I found him: As he moved aside I saw this..... Then 'Mum' showed her face! I'm wrapped! I had...

Hi fishboy619, Thanks for the comments. The fast growing plant in the back left corner is called Hygrophila Difformis or "Water Wisteria." Cheers, JS

    James Squires 10 Gallon Planted

Just updated my other tank thread so here's an update for this one too... Original tank-full of fry were moved into the bigger tank to make way for the next couple of spawnings who now live in this tank. Some of the plants started (came from supplier) with a little BBA problem and so a clean-up...

Thanks Dave, they should be too cos you're one of the informants! Reading posts from yourself and Sam and George and ..... everyone else on here has helped a lot. LOL! Fair call, this is the wife's contribution to the tank! One day (hopefully soon) it will simply disappear! Cheers, JS

    James Squires Planted 30 Gallon

Hi Sam, Thanks for dropping by. Not much algae around anymore. Some of the Hygro arrived from the Internet supplier complete with some BBA but that's under control now. There are still a couple of affected areas but it's much better than how the plants came. Hopefully it's on it's way out...

Andy, Thanks heaps for the kind and intelligent advice. I too am aiming for a 'Jungle' first off. I will sit back and just watch it grow for a few months, pruning the stem plants as they surface and replanting them to help fill out. I've been a bit slack in posting this update but this photo...

    James Squires 10 Gallon Planted

Hi Dave, Thanks for the comments. The initial 1.2WPG should actually be 1.6WPG (not much of a diff) as it's a 10Gallon tank with 16W of light under the hood. I realise that the Lilaeopsis won't go great guns in these conditions but will it survive ok? Or is it totally unkeepable at such low...

    James Squires 10 Gallon Planted

Hi Andrew, I thought the same about the emptiness of the front left so today I picked up some Lilaeopsis (micro sword) from the lfs. I planted a bunch in the front left and a small bunch in the front right. I'll post pics soon. Cheers.

    James Squires 10 Gallon Planted

Hi all, Thought I'd share with you my second tank. It's only just been setup and to me it's just not looking right. I know it needs to fill out and the plants just need to do their thing for now but the layout is not the best and Im keen for some suggestions... The tank is low light (at the...

    James Squires Planted 30 Gallon

Hi Alex, Thanks for the comments. I agree that the foreground needs lots of work! At the moment Im only dosing the tank with basic nutrients. I dose once weekly (with water change) with a product called 'Basic Gro' and dose daily with it's sister product 'Daily Gro.' I plan to purchase some...

    James Squires Planted 30 Gallon

Hi all, Decided after a lot of reading about and admiring of all the other planted tanks on this forum that I'd like to have a go at aquascaping myself. You all make it look so easy but after finishing my first 'scape' it has become clear to me that it is a lot harder than I thought! I think I...

    My New Kribs

Hi all, Thought I'd quickly post a couple of pics of my new pair of Kribensis. Im hoping to get them to settle in nicely into my community tank along with our Platies, Guppies, Bristlenoses and Swordies. They've been in for 24 hours now and are fitting in ok excepting a dust up with one guppy...

    My New Tank Setup

I was wondering about that actually. As I mentioned, the clown loach came with the tank and I was interested in knowing if it's going to eventually outgrow the tank? Is this true? He's already a reasonable size at about 3 1/2 inches long.... Cheers, JS

    My New Tank Setup

Ooh, bugger... I didn't realise. We bought them from the fish shop straight out of their plant tanks. Guess I'll have to see how well they go. Thanks for the heads up though. JS

    My New Tank Setup

Just thought I'd post a few piccies of our new tank. We are relatively new to this so any comments are encouraged. The tank is 3ft, 120Litre with undergravel filtration. It was bought secondhand and running with a Clown Loach and Siamese Flying Fox living in it. I brought the tank home with...
