    Fresh Water Clams?

OK, ok, ok. I inherited a few of these. Any other sites, etc. to check out, as mine appear to be neither the Asian Clam or the Mussel mentioned, and I'd love to know if these are safe for my planted or my brackish (puffer food). They look to be Corbicula fluminea. Any help would be appreciated.

Where Do You Get The Snails For Your Puffers?

Check the planted tank at your lfs. There are usually a ton of "pest snails" in there. Ask if you can have some. Many stores will just let you take them, some will charge you, but not much. To keep the pest snails breeding, you're going to need a separate tank, as most pest snails can't handle...

    African Id, Please

ooh! Even better. I'll just watch for males, and possibly separate them. Would it be any problem if I ended up with only one of the Kenyi's? Male or female? Or would I still need to keep a few others to displace aggression? by the way, you've all been loads of help!!! :drinks:

    African Id, Please

Thanks for the help!!! I completely agree. We had done months of research and had several lists, each one with compatible fish and the proper numbers to keep them in for our tank. We purchased a "bait locker" for long distance transport, and drove 2 hours to the only lfs that we felt we could...

    African Id, Please

We bought these guys (the blue ones) from a tank labeled "misc. malawi". I know, I know, always a terrible idea. Regardless, anybody have a sense of what these are? They're approx. 2". I've spent some time on google, fishbase, and a few others to no avail. I have some ideas, but nothing solid...

    Protein Skimmer

This has especially helped me with messy eaters (read: puffers) in high-end brackish. Because you're not going to be getting the same amount of "skimmate" as a full marine tank, you can generally get away with the cheaper air powered options.

    Bumble Bee Gobies

In addition, I wouldn't suggest going out and purchasing a BBG. But if this is a matter of "I've got one, now what?", then let me say I have had success with a single BBG and a single GSP kept in a 55g tank at 1.008sg. That said, I have no intention of keeping them together like this forever...

    Stocking Suggestions

I was curious what I could possibly stock a 34 us gallon aquarium (3 feet long) with. My better half would like African Cichlids. Would this be enough room? The tank is filtrated with a Fluval 405 (for up to 100g). We are sufferers of Multiple Tank Syndrome, and pretty much all of the others...

    New Setup-- River Cobbles

Most building supply stores sell an egg-crate style louvre for recessed ceilings. Googled it. It cuts simply with metal snips. Around here we can get a 2 foot by 4 foot piece for around $12. Spikey! great tank, and sorry to hijack your thread!! I've done something similar with flat rocks in a...

What Can I Have In A Brackish Tank

Thanks for the correction. Now that I think about it, I have heard of doriae before -- not sure why I didn't think about it! I'll do a little google, but if there's anything you know about doriae that would help, please respond again.

What Can I Have In A Brackish Tank

Bumblebee Gobies come in 2 different species (that I know of). There is the Brachygobius Xanthona and the Brachygobius Nunus. Brachygobius Xanthona has perfect unbroken black stripes. They are best suited for Brackish, but will "tolerate" freshwater. Brachygobius Nunus has less perfect stripes...

Im Getting A Green Spotted Puffer And I Was Wondering

As it takes some time for a GSP to grow to full size (and need the higher salinity) you could get away with BBGs with a GSP at around 1.005 to 1.008. I currently have a Bumblebee Goby in with a Green Spotted Puffer and a juvenile Black Molly in a 55gallon hex. kept at 1.008. Everyone tolerates...

    Mollies & Cory?

Aquarium Salt and Marine Salt are not the same thing. It is Marine Salt that Mollies need, and Marine Salt that Corydoras cannot handle. Sadly, the only thing to do here is to separate the two species. cheers. MoMa Assuming we're rehoming the Corydoras, you want to get yourself a...

    New Fugu Puffer

as an add-on to the pest/pond snail idea... I currently feed my puffer (gsp) both, and have been breeding them with much success. I have 3 "breeder tanks", although 1 is fine. An Inquiry From The Press / Sealed Aquarium

well, in the case of BioSphere, they neglected to add earthworms and other micro-organisms to the soil, effectivley giving the soil a limited "lifespan". Those little orbs are a bit of a novelty, often sold in the giftshops of major aquariums in the States. The probem with them, and the problem...

    Seems To Be A Problem

to his credit, he's from the States. There are actually very few medicines readily available where he is. In the states we can mail order just about anything --when it's obviously too late, but as for commercially available supplies, there's almost nil. Pretty much what we have in the States...

Buying Tank For Brackish Aquarium - Advice Please

To be honest, Neale's advice might be a bit better than mine, if only because it's more than likely any Figure 8 you purchase is being housed in Freshwater at the LFS. Starting w/ freshwater will eliminate the need for any "slow-drip" acclimation for the fish. I think the real key is raising...

Can A Bottom Layer Of Java Moss Be Used As A Filter In A 5 G?

I currently have a "no-tech" set-up in an IKEA vase just a tad larger than a pint glass. I have Java Moss and 2 small Moneywort clippings. There is a soil base covered in about 1" of gravel. There is also a scrap of bogwood in the tank. For lighting it has been getting only sunlight for about 8...

    Snails For Puffers

I figured I'd add to my original post. Snails are not the only thing we feed our GSP. I've had success with frozen bloodworm, which I've read will also help keep their teeth trimmed. Occasionally he'll eat Krill as well. While the bloodworm is mainly his staple diet, I try to "mix it up" as...

Buying Tank For Brackish Aquarium - Advice Please

Mix the salt and water first. Neale Monks has a handy program for measuring the amount of salt you need here. The bacteria in a brackish tank are a bit different than that of a freshwater tank, so as long as nothing else is housed in the tank yet, start cycling with brackish water. Using 50% of...

    Tetra T2 Hob Filter Died

Thanks for reading. We have a Tetra Hang On Back filter -- a T2? (from bottom of motor). We had recently changed to a sand substrate in a 48 gallon tank (no fish), to prepare for Mbuna. We will be upgrading to a canister filter to handle the increased bioload of African Cichlids. I want to...

    Snails For Puffers

Those snails that "breed like crazy" and come on your plants are exactly the ones I breed for our Green Spotted Puffer. He loves 'em. I would still set up a separate tank to breed them in -- some live plants, small heater, fine mesh over the filter intake (to keep from gobbling them up when...

    Keeping That Beak Trim

I use a small 5 gallon tank, slightly overfed, for breeding snails. Throw in a live plant or two. Place a fine mesh over the filter intake as to not suck up all the smaller snails. Small heater. Two weeks to a month and WHAMMO - snail explosion! cheers. MoMa

Want To Keep Puffers In Specialised Tank

As Brackish "Equipment" I would add a few 5 gallon buckets (depending on the size of your tank) and a small heater for each one. When you mix the marine salt & water, it takes a little bit for it to dissolve -- don't want it to get too cold. An air stone in the bucket helps dissolve the salt...

    Moving Gsp To Full Marine

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I'm realizing I didn't find any habitat bits on fishbase because I was looking for full marine! And I love the idea of the damsels when we get to that point -- it's actually what I was hoping for! As for 1.005 for the first couple of inches... He's currently 2"...

My two cents worth, one penny at a time.... 1. I wish everyone overanalyzed that movie (p.s. i liked it). In the states, sales of clownfish rose 600% after the release of that movie. How many of those purchases do you think were made on impulse? 2. Fish not being smart? I wish I could...

Gravel To Sand Swap In 75 Gal

Unfortunately I don't know if malachite green will stain the sand, but I would recommend waiting until after the whitespot is under control before converting as this will add to the stress level of the remaining fish. Placing Rocks In Aquarium

First, if you do not have a floating base aquarium (i.e. AllGlass brand in the U.S. has a floating base), you will need to support the bottom of the aquarium by resting it on top of a cut-to-fit piece of styrofoam. Next, go to an electrical supply/hardware store and purchase "egg crate" louvres...
