I recently discovered that we have UV sterilizers. So that's a good thing, however, ich still spreads. Does anybody know how to properly maintain a UV bulb? Apparently this one was replaced a year ago and nothing else has been done to it.

Does it hurt a plant any to have an undergravel filter drawing water down under it?

I just realized something we do that could be a problem...they have us replace the carbon pad and the other coarser pad in the filter (it's a biowheel) when they get dirty. But, shouldn't we leave one of those so we're not constantly removing the bacteria...or is the biowheel where the bacteria...

There are now seven Colombians in my tank. They are peaceful so far, and seem to encourage the penguins and pencilfish to come out of hiding. What, are they afraid of the little pangasius cats that spend all day in the darkness of a castle? :D

My current favorite is the Colombian tetra. I like its larger size and bright red fins. It's a good break from the typical 1.5" fish. :D

Female bettas would be just fine, considering that they can live in small containers. And I'm guessing fish that are used to living in creeks, like zebra danios and white cloud mountain minnows would be happy enough as well.

The spots are bigger than a grain of salt, and there are a few of them of them, similar to a cluster of eggs. Altogether the area of spots is about 3/16 of an inch or 1/3 of a centimeter. There isn't any redness.

I don't know the answers to your four questions. I just wanted to say: make sure you have marbles or something at the bottom of the breeding tank to hide the eggs when they fall so the parents can't eat them. Shallow water is good, like six inches deep.
