Substrate was over two years old. Everything has been very fine since I changed it.

Is your substrate old? It might be that the substrate is simply dead as they call it. I had this experience once and i had to exchange the substrate.

Bristlenose are bad for your plants when they become big. Otos are great but I recommend 4-6 of them or more, great fish that likes to be in groups. SAE is the best algea eater (eaven eats black hair algae) and can be kept 2 or more togeather, it is the flying fox and the chinese algae eater...

I know pressurised is the way to go but this reactor is is the nearest to it I have seen. You just connect a CO2 bottle to it and off it goes, no mix or anything. P.S. Have to quit smoking so I can taste the CO2 :P
