I have a pair of german blue Rams (male, female) and the male seems to be going uop the the female and "smelling/pecking" at her. They seem to be more colorfull when they are doing this. Or is he just picking on her. What would be a normal activity for rams when they breed. I have been feeding them bloodworms for like 2 days, and the water is at 82F. They are also in a 50 Gallon. If any one can help that would be great thanks.

Also should i have caves and rocks for them to breed?

The "pecking" you refer to sounds like courtship.

For a start, your females belly will turn a lovely glowing red.

Your rams will then allocate themselves territory area to lay the eggs (usually a flat surface somewhere in the tank (piece of slate, flat side of a rock or something similar).

Your female will then lay her eggs, the male will fertilise and they will then guard them to the hilt.

You may also find that the male pushes the female out of the territory, or vice versa, and just one of them will remain by the eggs.

Should the eggs not hatch/become infertile, then they will be eaten by the rams.

If this is the first time your rams will be spawning then don't be too downheartened if the eggs do not hatch. It is common for a newly formed pair to spawn a good few times before they successfully raise any fry. Practice makes perfect as they say :D .

oh cool, ya now she was doing the samething to him and her belly is a nice red color. I guess i should put a flat rock surface in the tank for them. Will they lay there eggs on a piece of drift wood? Thanks for the info!!

Also where in the tank should the rock be placed (away from moving water, etc) thanks

I imagine they would lay their eggs on driftwood, yes.

if you are going to add a flat surface I would just suggest putting it somewhere "out of the way" so as to reduce the requirement of other fish to enter the rams, territory.

Unless your filter blows a torrent of water through the tank I don't think water movement will be a problem.

They might also choose a plant to spawn on. In my experience you dont select the spot for them, they do. And they always change places!!!

I think they have already chosen the place to lay the eggs on.

But I have been wondering about several things. What makes them eat the eggs. Is it because they think they cannot protect them? Is it because they are infertile? And why are they infertile, is it because they Ph is too high? Any ideas?

My pair has spawned 5 times now and the eggs always dissapear ower night. They are spawning in a community tank and I am wondering what is happening. Is it maybe the Bristlenose that i eating them?
