    125 Gallon Re-Scape!

Love the re-scape. As good as pots are as ornaments and as a great substrate for bacteria, they make tanks look unnatural to be honest.

    Need Sand Recommendations

If you don't want play sand, then pool filter sand is probably the next most economnical option. Makes a great substrate IMO

    How Would You Aquascape This?

I always recommend valisneria for the back. It makes a brilliant, dynamic background and grows fast even in low light. I bought 20 for my 4ft tank 6 months ago. Now I have over 50 and can't see the back of the glass anymore :) amazon swords and anubias are good for beginner plants and will look...

    Guppies Not Giving Birth

I had to go away for a fortnight, leaving the tank in the care of a friend. A few days after I got back, I noticed a couple of fry in the tank! No idea how long they've been there but judging by the size, I'd guess about a week. I can only assume that they are surviving on leftover food, algae...

    Wood

I came across a list of safe and unsafe woods a while back, will see if I can find it for you. There were very few types of wood that were safe for aquariums, and many that leeched toxins into the water. So until you can confirm the type and safety of the wood, I wouldn't waste time treating it.

    Using Natural Driftwood

Agreed. Wood is too porous to be soaking in bleach or vinegar. Just rinse it and scrub it for a day using boiling water. Then soak it in an aquarium or wheely bin until it's water logged and tannins have stopped leaching, changing the water once week. This should eliminate any nasties in or on...

What Was The Fish That First Got You Into Fish Keeping?

Not a fish, but axolotls sparked my interest and got me into aquariums. I've always been intrigued by by reefs as well, though I've never had a marine tank.

    Just An Axie Update :)

Gorgeous axolotl! I have 6 adults and currently rearing my first golden albino, waiting for it to grow big enough for the main tank. How big is your axolotl? Looks like he could start on earthworms now, just as good as tubifex but probs easier to keep him well feed imo :)      They are one of...

    Build An Algae Scrubber

Love the scrubber! Please keep us updated with the affect this has on your nitrates :) You could get the best of both worlds by limiting the flow rate and filling some of that container with de-nitrate media.. a hybrid nitrate scrubreactor!

    Guppies Not Giving Birth

Thank you! Yeah a few of them look rather square, I think option 2 is the most likely. The tank is an attempt to meet the needs of both species (though admittedly falls out of the optimal zone for either) at around room temperture (20'C). My spare tank is currently in use rearing a juvenile...

    Guppies Not Giving Birth

I've had guppies in my tank for about a month and all the females have looked ready to drop for the last few weeks. Will they ever give birth at room temperature? I can't raise the temperature as my axolotls don't like heat but I'm worried that the extended pregnancy might be stressful to the fish

    Hi I'm Nadez

Hi all!   I've used this forum a bunch for information but only recently started posting, love the community though! Below is my only tank. It's a 200L planted axolotl tank filtered by a Hydor Professional 250 and lit by a DIY 100W CFL unit. The tank contains one leucystic, one albino, one...

    Tt's Axolotl Adventure

I've kept axolotls for a bit over a year and they are very rewarding but they do have some important care criteria. You've already heard about the lighting, which needs to be low or at least used in conjunction with plenty of shade. Impaction is the next problem. Axolotls will try to eat...

    Build An Algae Scrubber

The previous post is a great way to do this. Alternatively you can float plastic mesh on the surface with a spray bar and standard fluorescent lighting to achieve a horizontal algae scrubber. Nitrate reactors are also highly successful if you fancy some DIY or have a spare canister lying around...

    Guppy Lying At The Bottom

Hi,   I've had guppies in my tank for a week now, no problems other than one leaping out. But one of the males, and annoyingly the prettiest, is lying at the bottom of the tank. He's not lying on his side and is capable of movement, but when he swims, he seems to be struggling to stay 'afloat'...

    How To Create Large Bubbles

Thank you for your replies, I figured that just the lone tube might be the best option (I haven't actually ordered an air pump yet).     Very helpful, what is the flow rate of that pump?

    How To Create Large Bubbles

This is a short question, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere. It's easy to use air stones and the like to produce a fine stream of bubbles from your air pump. But how can you set it up to produce a slower release of much larger bubbles? Something like the bubbles in this...

    External Filter Tests

Thank you very much @KirkyArcher! That result validates Fluval's claimed circulation rate of 460LPH for the Fluval 206, with a 780LPH pump output. Good to know that this circulation rate is fairly accurate, even if it is relatively inefficient vs the pump output. I'm guessing that they measure...

    External Filter Tests

I have found this thread extremely useful and think it deserves to be revived. I have one test of my own to contribute and would like to beg the members of this forum for the true output rate of the following filters:   Fluval 206,     Fluval 306,     Eheim Ecco Pro 200 (2234),     Eheim Ecco...
