Fry getting too big for the breeding trap

The fry are 3 weeks old now. The largest one is around 12mm long. Perhaps, I don't want to raise them to full maturity. Just large so that they won't be eaten in the large tank. At what size, they will be large enough to go back to the main tank? Nikki

Fry getting too big for the breeding trap

My platy fry are around 12mm long now. With about 22 of them, will it be too crowded in the breeder trap? When they grow to 15mm or more, do you think they will be safe with the adults? BTW, do I need to worry about in-breeding at this point? TIA Nikki

    DIY CO2 Help

Sime, I have something similar. However, to precisely regulate the CO2, this coke bottle method isn't reliable. If you want to have precise control, you really need to use pressurized CO2. Nikki

what's this white stuff coming out from tiger barb

Ouch! Internal parasites!! I don't like the sound of that at all. I am not sure what do you mean by skinny. It would describe it as shapping like cloud (ie. it isn't paper thin but it is not to round either). Look like I will have a problem now bec. the white stuffs has fallen off and all...

what's this white stuff coming out from tiger barb

Hi there, I have a very sick tiger barb. It is very thin an lately it has been blowing all over by the filter output. Anyway, this morning, I observed that it has some white jelly-like stuff coming from its anus. It isn't the normal fish's waste for sure. To me, it looks like male semen...

    Trimming advise

No. That's fine. I don't think you are hijacking the thread at all :) For me, I use pair of scissors. I also have those long reach planting scissors that you can get from the LFS. Sometimes, I found it easier to use a small dissection knife to cut the plant at the bottom to get a really...

    Trimming advise

Hi Dubby, Thanks. I have that one too. But it doesn't seem to work for me. Once I cut the leaf, the stem will not go away and no new leaf will grow from it. What I really want to do is to trim the whole plant down and let it start over again. I am interested to know if this is possible...

    Trimming advise

Hi there, I have a planted tank. My plants (Echinodorus palaefolius var. latifolius) have been growing quite well. Actually too well. They are growing a little too tall. How should I trim it down? I want to trim it down to the bare minimum to let it grows tall again. I notice that if I...

Well, I don't know what happen to my well water. It used to be quite acidic. When I tested it just now, it was perfectly 7.0. I guess I don't need to adjust hte pH after all. Thanks for all your advises. When my water goes back to acidic again, I know what to do. Nikki

Should I use baking soda to increase pH?

Up to now, when I change the water, I will first use commercial pH adjusting solution to increase the water pH to 7. Can I use baking soda and get the same result? My water have very good KH value but almost non-existence GH. BTW, mine is a planted freshwater tank. Thanks. Nikki

What happen when it is pointing down? I read somewhere that this pointing up and down behavior is like the nitrite (or nitrate? i can't be sure) is too high. Nikki

    Good algae eaters

How about getting couple of oto? They are little things that love to eat algae. In my algae eating collection, I also have a couple of rosy barbs. I found them execellent in removing the hair algae. BTW, it is fun to watch them sucking and pulling the hair algae from the plant too :) Nikki

    Painted Aquarium Backgrounds

I have a suggestion for you. Use a tinted window film and attach that on the side facing the window. This will block out the sunlight sufficiently. The darker tint will only let 5% sunlight pass through. Best of all, if you ever move the tank away from the window, you can simply remove the...

    Leaves turning yellow

Well, I have CO2 added and the amount of CO2 dissolved in the water is optimal. The light is only 3 months old. Also, I have attached aluminum foil inside the hood to reflect more light into the tank. Since I added the echinodorus 3 months ago, they have at least double their size. So I...

    Leaves turning yellow

I have couple of echinodorus palaefolius var. latifolius in my tank. Lately, some of their leaves have turned yellow and then simply decomposed. However, my other plants are just doing fine. Should I be worried at all? I have a 32 gal tank with total of 40W lighting. I tested the water...

    "True" SAEs at my lfs

I only have 1 SAE in my tank and it is happy as hell eating up all the algae available. I have never seen it bother others and very peaceful. From your description, it surely is a true SAE. For hair algae, my SAE won't touch them at all (may be if it is still very short and soft). However, I...

My case of disappearing cardinal tetras

Hi folks, here is another one for you. I bought 6 neons last night. I took extra time (total 4 hrs) to let the neons get used to the water. Before the lights were off, all of them were accounted for. However, this morning, all 5 of the 6 neons were gone!!! No bodies found!! I think I...
