I went to a Wal-mart near my school and I was surprise when I went to the fish department....The tanks aren't really overstocked, it was clean, the fish was healthy and they have their betta on tanks not cups....and no dead fish...not much selection though they have about two tanks of african cichlids which look really coloured up(looks like they were fed hormones), but other than that they look pretty healthy and cheaper.....

So glad to know there are a few WM's out there that are responsible with their fish. Wish the others would take lessons.

Do walmarts In Canada Ontario carry fish? The two that are close to me do not have any fish at all. Although when I was younger I do recall being in a walmart that did have some, but I have no idea where I was.

I have heard WM's are horrible on their fish, so glad to see you've come across one that isnt! They have to start somewhere...

Yes, they do. The prices are good too.

I've only found one in Ontario that doesn't carry fish, and that's the one in the Seaway Mall in Welland.

Every single other one carries fish, but then again, I mostly only go to the ones in Southern Ontario.

Hi G_Sharky :)

While they might be an exception. for whatever reason. there are some good pet departments in Walmart stores. One of our members. rabbitlady. runs one in Texas. It was kind of you to notice and tell us about the one you saw.

I believe the old saying is true, "You can catch more flies with sugar than you can with vinegar." A kind word will go much farther to promote and encourage good things than all the temper tantrums and complaints will do to eliminate the bad.

Why not send a brief letter to the manager of the store commending them on their excellent fish department? It would do a lot to cheer the hard working employees who maintain it, and would surely help the store manager to see the value of keeping it that way.

A note to their corporate offices would be a good thing to do too, and will only take a few minutes to write. Walmart, like other large entities, gets lots and lots of negative mail, and much of it is from cranks and crack pots. They quickly file this stuff away in the circular file, so to speak. But a letter of praise for something going on in one of their stores would certainly be noted and remembered. If enough of these were sent, it could make a difference in the way they run these departments. :D

As someone who had a part time job in the pet dept. at the wally world when I was younger I can tell you that wal mart puts a lot of responsibility on people in each dept. The pet dept. is the one no one wants because of the required tank maintenance, fish netting, and customer questions.....this on top of every other responsibility of a dept employee. It can be difficult. If you find a walmart with nice tank.....take the time out to give the person responsible praise. He/she really deserves it!!

I've actually been pretty surprised about the Walmarts in the Toronto area. The 2-3 stores that i've been in had crystal clear tanks, not over-stocked, and hardly any floaters.

Hamilton mountain Walmart doesn't have fish...I don't think Eastgate Walmart has them either.

My walmart just got a new Fish department manager who asks me for advice.

Since he came along the tanks are looking better - but there are some things that he has to do and can't change - like having 800+ goldfish spread out in 3 10g tanks... But I guess that's the only way to sell them and make a profit..

Hi The-Raven :)

I think it would be really good if you could get him in touch with rabbitlady. No doubt, having worked thought problems running such a difficult department herself, she could help him.

If you give him the forum address and he joins, he could send her a pm from here.

One way, although it might take a little time, to improve the quality of Walmart's pet departments is for them to gradually build a network of department managers working together from inside the system.

There are more ways than one to solve any problem. ;)

Yes, it's good to hear that there are some good WMs out there... :D
Eunen_de, where abouts are you? I live sort-of near an Eastgate shopping centre that has a Walmart, and I noticed they don't have any fish. :)

I would have to say that a Wal-Mart with a healthy fish department is one for the ages. I live in Northern California and ours is on the brink of distruction. There are always "floaters" and tanks are either over-crowded or mis-labeled. One big flaw I can find is that they do not post a size reference or temperment card with the tanks. The store here carries Clown Knife fish that are around 4" and there is no warning about their size or "habit" of eating smaller tank mates. I have talked to the attendant on a few occassions and he informed me that the store doesn't have a policy to do so. I have only bought 2 fish from WM that has lived longer than 4 wks. My 8" Pacu and my 5" sail fin pleco (I paid $3 for it) in the LFS's they go for $8-$11 a piece so I can't complain about getting a good deal on that one.

Very good point made. I think Wal-Mart could improve their pet dept. situation....though its been years since I've worked there and they may already have. I think it can be according to the type of store manager you have too...one that hears your issues, complaints, cries for help (lol), etc.
