ok i done some digging also and it looks like my shrimps\snails and fish could all do with harder water so i may look to add some crushed coral into the filter stack.

Hi,   i noticed tonight that 2 of my RCS have what appears like a orange\brown line running the length of there spine.  The others that i've seen tonight appear 'normal'.  I'll try and get a photo if i can but anyone know what this discoloration might be?   thanks. 

I have the hardness results from the tetra strips but i dont like to rely on the strips really so i was looking for a more accurate liquid kit.  I know i have hard water in my region but want to be 100% sure before i even think about making alterations.

its nocturnal lighting. Allows you to view your tanks inhabitants that come out at night (snails, shrimps etc..) It can also help with reducing algae growth (not sure how much truth there is in this).

you have a good mix looking at your list.  Your probably right about the crayfish, especially as the redclaw is the only one available in UK.  Shrimps are great, i have a small colony of 12 (and growing). Post a pic once you have them all settled in, the tank should look good.

I take it you are planting the tank up as your looking at shrimps.  How about introducing an Apple snail or even a couple of dwarf Crayfish.  Adds some variety into the balance of the tank.   The selection of fish looks good, there are some nice Rasboras around if you want a change from neons...

If your filter has carbon in it you may need to remove it or it could render your meds useless.

Be careful with any meds that contain copper as some 'ICH' treatments do, they may harm your snails.    ESHA Exit & ESHA 2000 are the two i was advised may be ok to use with snails present.  I'd still move them if you have a spare little tank for a few days.  ...

Found conflicting information online as to whether Assassin snails would or could attack an Apple snail.  There aren't comparable in size, the assassins are only about 10-15mm whilst the apple is over 30mm.  Just wondered if anyone had any experience with keeping the two together.   By the way...
