Giving Up On Neon Tetra Completely

My Neons look great and never had NTD either.

Where are you located?  US or UK?

I have 2 neons for a while now and they are great. the last 2/ first neons i got one died suspiciously after a day when my guppy gave birth and the other i think died of old age as its colour wasnt as bright so i must be keeping them in reat conditions but have to say they do stand out for that neon strip. i havent seen cardinals in real live but i had bad luck as my pets@home and that hard to get LFS dont have them in stock ( i see the sticker name of them in the shop so i know they have them)

I got a shoal of 12 neons about 6 weeks ago; only nine left, which all seem to be doing well.  Never saw any dead ones or remains though.......

I have neons too, uk based.

I bought 8 from MA as there cardinals were under observation for a couple of weeks and I wanted a splash of colour in my tank. This was about three four months ago now, I have lost one when prairiesunflower was losing one too, but thankfully the others look fantastic and shoal as seven now.

I must admit, I do still prefer cardinals, but am more than happy with my neons for now :)

Well another one of mine is dieing as normal complete waste of money rest of my fish still completely healthy

I think neons need to be culled 2 of my friends r also having the same probs they need culling and rebreeding back in to captivity

I lost all my cardinal tetras at the end of last year in the space of a week.  Rest of the fish\shrimp\snails were fine.  Maybe its a UK distribution of them as most people having the same problems are here and purchased them in the last 8-12 weeks.

I notice that my LFS stopped selling them around the time i lost mine too.

I have x-ray tetras now and so far they seem fine.

I need to rethink my second school of fish now but i want fish that will live lol:)

Maybe the Neon Tetra disease comes over in waves. I've not had any deaths  at all except when a couple of them got jammed with their tails sticking out from behind the filter and the other tetras decided to eat them alive.  :(

I intially set myself the task of breeding Neons but have not really got very far, still at the stage of growing them so they are mature enough to breed which has taken a year.

I'd suggest you get some green neon tetras. They are harder to come by here in london as only a few stores stock them regularly.

Buut this is pretty much indicative of most species. Barring the ntd most of the fish in the lfs have been over bread to the point where a sudden drop in temperature might do them an injury. Poor genetics are going to be more prevalent in the fish which are most popular. My favorite species is apistogramma and in this species the borellii, agz, and cacs in most places are no better than platies. Easy to spot if you know the tell tale signs (the apistos mouth being first) but most don't and so the species becomes just that much weaker once the offspring are sold back to the lfs.

Pretty sure I'm down to 8 neons now; again no sign of bad health, distress, or remains.......

Still have 9 - doing great and are the fish that draw the ooos and ahhhs from folks that see my tank.

Pretty much this stuff, annoys me sometimes the way people instantly put down Neons as an option just because they have had a bad experience. I have only had one neon (over years of keeping them) who displayed signs that could even come close to NTD and to be honest i'm really not sure it was. None of my other fish caught it and a one of my Neons was my second-longest lived fish! They should never be dismissed as an option just because some other people may not have had a great experience, same with Dwarf Gourami's and Guppies (among other things). I also happen to prefer them to Cardinals, they always seem to have just a little bit more personality to them.

I wouldn't give up on a fish I like. I had Neon's when I first set up my tank, I lost 3 but I think that's because I wasn't fully cycled. I now have a schol of 8 and they look great! So peaceful and bright! I also have Gourami and guppies! All look great together and live together peacefully. I'm also in the UK.
