VHOs require a special ballast. For the agruement of cost vs output alone, you would almost have to go with power compacts.

    Tropical water lilies

You could do it in a 65 gallon with a very intense light source like a 250w MH pendant lamp. You just have to remember to fertilize the substrate often.

    Soil substrate

Don't be too quick to tear down that tank. A common thing I've seen in the last 20 years with heavily planted tanks is that your normal cycling process will never complete in the classical way. Your plants will actually out compete the bacteria for the foods these bacteria need. They will...

    sinkers on plants at petsmart

You'll be hard pressed to find a real lead weight these days. None of the major domestic nurseries use them anymore because of federal regulations.

Do not plant the rhizome and yes it applies to all species of Anubias.

    Soil substrate

What kind of soil is it? What color was it when you first put it in your tank? If the soil contains organic matter then it's going to produce methane gas as well as a few others too. It's just normal the normal break down of soil, no matter how much or how little you use. The best way to...

    2 700K for plants

Hey guys, the idea is to find what looks good to you. The plants for the most part could care less as long as it's a usable spectrum. If your plants a looking leggy do some research on the species. It's not always caused by your lighting choice, but a higher kelvin bulb does produce shorter...

    Looking for DuckWeed

Duck weed always has roots that hang down. They must have a fish that like to munch on it. Shipping costs to Canada for live plants would blow you mind. There is a $100USD charge just for the export certificate.
  20. O

    2 700K for plants

Plants can and do use the spectrum provided between 5000K and 10000K. Please don't confuse a 10000K bulb with an Actinic bulb as they are not the same at all. With the 10000K bulbs your plants use more CO2 because the plants are able to use light in the 660-700 nm range more efficiently...

    Looking for DuckWeed

I think you problem will be finding it in small enough quantities. I know we only sell it in two pound quantities and that is a hell of a lot of duck weed. You might have better luck just by stopping by the LFS and scooping some out of their tanks. They will probably just give it to you...

Mystery Plant and Sword Plant Question

Yep, you have an Amazon Compacta sword and a Java Fern. You really shouldn't bury the rhizome of the Java Fern. This usually results in the rhizome rotting after a few months. You can bury some of the hair roots coming off it it but that is what it uses to pull nutrients out of the water...

    2 700K for plants

Nope. You need somewhere between 5000K and 10,000K.

    Brazilian Sword Plant

You probably have a Spathiphyllum tasson, aka Peace Lily. It is a bog plant and is commonly used as a top to a betta vase. The roots are left in the water while the rest of the plant is out of the water.

    is this gonna work

Yep, it's also called the poor man's calcium reactor in the salt water world. I think it would probably work just fine for non-digging cichlids.

    java fern going beserk

Do not cut the mother plant. The babies will grow out and look just like a miniature java fern. They will eventually drop off and that is when they are ready to plant somewhere else.

As far as how many goes, that really depends on your personal tastes. You can choose from tons of different plants. Crypts, Swords, Anubias, Nypheas, Sags, Vals, etc....... Here is a good link to a list of low light plants. I've tried all of these plants so I know they work.

Congrats on the crypts. All too many people give up on them too soon. I really have to encourage everyone to use the fastest shipping method they can at this time of year. It's kind cold out there. What did you order ecto?

    What exactly is a rhizome?

And yes to the third question also. You can split them if you have at a minimum of 3 leaves per each section of rhizome you want to split. You want to have 3 leaves on each section. Just take a sharp knife and cut it.

    What exactly is a rhizome?

Yes and yes to both questions. The rhizome will rot if buried.

    Severe algae problem

You might try adding DIY CO2 first. I noticed what I thought was some stem plants in there but it was kinda hard to tell with the problem you have there. If so additional CO2 will help them out compete the algae for food. Add a bit more lighting and you should start seeing some big changes...

    compact Flourecent Coralife bulbs

Oh geez, duh, that's what I get for reading too fast. Yes, the marine bulbs are not very good for plant growth. Switch back to the daylight bulbs if possible. The marine actinic bulbs are purpose built to encourage algae growth. Inside of corals there is a tiny bit of algae in each cell that...

    Baking Soda

I should have asked this before but what plants are you keeping? There are a few common plants like Bacopa carolina or Hygrophila polysperma that will use the carbonates in the water to build more plant tissue. When you add good light and a little extra CO2 you will see a drop in your DH and...

I just read you other post. What fish are you keeping? You ought to consider going to a ph controller at some point.
  38. O

    Baking Soda

Another question you need to find out is what is your PH right now and what are you trying to get it too? If you are just trying to raise your hardness and don't really care about the PH then you could put a bag of crushed coral or oyster shells in you filter. That would raise you calcium...

    Lighting with halogen lamps?

Halogen lamps render a light that is not usable by plants. Algae should do really well but not plants.
