    Pipe Cleaning

I had a net curtain tension rod left over from some while ago and tend to stuff a couple of "wan sheet does plenty" sheets in then push through with the tension rod :)

Are You Loosing Sockets To Large Timers?

I paid a little over £15 for my setup. It involved 3x 2 gang sockets, 3x double gang patress boxes and a few pounds of 1.5mm core flex. Hooked them up in a parallel fashion and it works a treat. Will get a photo and post later once the kids are not up and going to be poking their noses in :)

Is There A Cheaper Way Than Getting A Structural Engineer Out?

there are a few issues here: what are the full dimensions of the tank? an 8' x 6" x 6" comes in at 60KG whilst 5'x2'x2' is about 560KG a huge difference use the tank calculator to work it out then ask the next question: would you put a piano there? Dunno why but some people find it easier to...

    External Heaters - Efficiency

Anyone have any good solid information on the difference (or lack of) in energy efficiency on external heaters? In a simple way, im considering swapping my 300w internal for a 300w external to remove more equipment from the tank (recently shifted to an ex filter.) However I'm really interested...

Building A Hood - Ideas Please

I used the guide on the pinned topics diy section to make a hood for my 4'. Had to modify the top cross bar to a T bar because otherwise the cat sitting on it was simply bending it but the missus loves how it looks, enough for me to be let loose on a home made stand.

How Long Do You Keep Your Fish For?

my eldest just died at 5 years old, a zebra loach :( RIP but i keep them for as long as they will live - if there are compatibility issues, id source more equipment to be able to seperate the required parties.

My Cat Set My House On Fire!

yup. its a sad state of affair. we are in private rent and have old fuse wire style leccy box. If it had been a new style RCD, would have tripped without a problem, but the landlord would never replace it unless forced to. still, at least as you say there was someone home and none of the more...

My Cat Set My House On Fire!

so the missus is at home, got the kids here having a nice afternoon. When suddenly, under the fish tank, there is a bang, flash then a fire under the fish tank :o I came home from work to discover the cat had piddled on an extension strip which has the lights, external filter & air pump plugged...

    Light Reflectors

I recently experimented when I fitted blue cathode "moonlight" and lost a lot upward and out. A kitchen roll tube cut in half with some tin foil one shiny side down other shiny side up, white card and photo paper. I found for the blue light, tin foil shiny side reflecting worked best. I then...

    Best External Filter?

I just joined the EC club and spent a year deliberating what to get. I'm a huge eheim fan, with a current aquaball. But in the end, the fact that the tetratec ex1200 was A LOT cheaper and included all bars n media won the debate after some good stories on here. It has to me absolute silent...

    Diy Aquarium Filter.

at around £13 for a simple pump to lift the water, thats what I would go for and it will also give you a return pump if you decide to go down the sump route one day.

    Filters & Youtube Videos

see thats my idea - go to the sink to keep things clean, but take a bucket of old water with you for doing the cleaning. as for the question about the tank size, its close to 200 litrees, but originally price meant quite a bit - £10 more was £10 too much. I looked at my LFS website...

    Filters & Youtube Videos

Im getting myself a new external filter for my big tank in a week or so, but never quite been able to decide which one. The cheapo ebay, the eheim 2224, the tetratec ex700, rena xp, so on and so forth. But in order to help there is good old youtube - an get maintenence & setup videos that give...

Now Thats What I Call Planning...

    Best Camera?

the earlier pictures were with a Samsung S40 believe it or not! was rather impressed by them. Its a neighbour of mines that has the S1500, was playing around with it yesterday. Building A Cabinet

B&Q seel cabinet hinges and a drill bit for the recess hole. my grandfather was a carpenter and would have killed anyone calling him a joiner lol. For ultimate strength I always favour a good dovetail joint where the width is suitable to have more than 1 tail, though I have done this on a hood...

Now Thats What I Call Planning...

So im sitting here tonight doing a little bit of dream shopping and some planning. Money isn't the stuff we find lying around the home (thats called dust - plenty of that in the nooks n crannies) and i've built my wish list for my marine tank. Its a 96" x 30" x 24" tank and ive went through...

    Best Camera?

This camera can be a little slow to first photo but otherwise a good buy. Another bonus to AA is that you can get rechargables and have spares in our bag and if really really stuck, some duracell are only a nearest shop away. The Canon SX120 is another good contender.

Why Are My Nitrates So High?

i fill straight from the cold tap - using water held in a tank can introduce undesirables such as metals from the tank. If its a plastic tank you are not so bad but for the hot water, I'd personally recommend boiling a kettle to bring the cold tap up to temp (my tap water comes out at a paltry 6...

    Best Camera?

another keen area is if you are using a tripod setup to sit and watch a particular spot and snap that fish as it passes, a camera with cable release is a fantastic feature. I think the Fujifilm finepix s1500 has this feature, and at arund £129 its another great beginners camera.

I have the internal Eheim Aquaball 2212 atm which i cannot fault and an Elite Stingray for my corner tank - which does its job but i do have issue with it. Best Filter For A 4Ft Tank

I currently use an Eheim Aquaball 2212 in my 4' tank but it does get dirty and clogged fairly quick, but I otherwise love it. Used to have a Fluval prior to that and the powerhead on that gave me no end of grief. I am looking to move it over to an external Eheim 2224 if santa is very good to me.

    Best Camera?

An excellent recommendation and reminding me: I recently read a reviw of a "snake rod" camera intended for use by trades people to see in awkward places. Ebay External Filter Came Today!

A little bit of my two pence is that most of my tank has been on a budget. The 4' tank was £20 so on so forth. Ultimately though, its the simple things with these cheaper versions that need checked out: does it seal shut ok? Do the pipes fit ok? Is the throughput adequate ( I never expect...

Using Acrylic Sheet For Diy Tank...

Ok I was at my LFS and saw a 60cm3 tank for £300. I know I can build a stand and hood for £40 that looks better than the one that came with the tank. I also have a lovely spot in my hall where I wuld like to put a tall tank, but it needs to be narrower than this tank. So I started thinking...
