I have had my trusty Fluval filter since I set up my 54L 5years ago and it has served me well. It is starting to flag a bit though now, so I think the time has come to replace it. What are your favorite filter types/brands? What works best for you?

I am looking at replacing my gravel with sand, so for me at least an UGF is out of the question (by the way, thanks for the sand guide - it was VERY helpful). I have noticed from the gorgeous tank pics on here that none of the filters seem visable - is this because they are external or because they are just very well hidden?

Would love to hear your input and experinces :)

Depending on your budget I would get an external you just cant beat them IMO. Other than that the Fluval internal U series are pretty good now :)

im a big fan eheim filters i run pro2 external and an aquaball internal. i love them .

I have the internal Eheim Aquaball 2212 atm which i cannot fault and an Elite Stingray for my corner tank - which does its job but i do have issue with it.

I plan on replacing the Aquaball with an Eheim 2224 after xmas to go external and make maintenence a little easier.

I also want to replace the Stingray with the Fluval U1 - to be honest if using an internal on any tank now i'd probably buy these now due to the control and range of output options. The mini "spray bar" on the u1 lets me limit the disturbance caused by the power of the filter really well, something the Stingray cause bother to my betta with.

My Sera filter I've got in my 10 gal seems to be working well, it had slowed down after my mum who looks after my tanks while I'm at uni didn't clean it for 4 months but was just need to be rinsed in tank water to get it working full power again. It's rated for 60 litres but fr your tank i'd probably go for the 1 for the 120 litre tank. I got it because it was a bit cheaper than the equivalent fluval at my lfs and the guy said they were just as reliable.

I have seen some very good reviews by people using the Tetratec filters. I use mostly the Rena XP series and have found them to be quite reliable and easy to care for. My oldest one is now over 6 years old and still going strong. It requires cleaning about 3 times a year, but that is because it is in a low load environment. I have a newer Rena XP that needs cleaning about every 6 to 8 weeks, but it is in a heavily populated tank.
