    Mangrove Environments

Reds (Rhizophora mangle) are the easiest to find, both commercially and out in nature. All Rhizophora species also have those beautiful prop roots we all like, unlike other common species such as white and black mangroves.   Salinity doesn't really matter much (or even full immersion in water)...

    Mangrove Environments

Hi, I have one with a single, impressive root of 30 cm, thick about 0.8 cm, strongly rooted onto the substrate; until 2 weeks ago she had like 10 big, thick and robust leaves. Down to 4 sad ones, now... The others all have some roots, 10 to 15 cm long, but none thicker than a few mm, and all...

    Mangrove Environments

Hi HX67, how's your paludarium doing?   My mangroves have lost most of their leaves in a matter of a few weeks, a total disaster.   Still wondering what's happening. Just now that I am increasing the height of the aerial part, to give them more room...   Cheers!

    Mangrove Environments

Dav Mads, well, the only fish I've personally seen among mangroves are the ones you've seen in my photo (Fiji; no idea what they are), and some species of puffer (in Brazil). The rest of the occasions, visibility was zero. Plus, they hide very well, in that mess! Lots of crabs, of course! Still...

    Mangrove Environments

Hej Mads, in ONE of those pics you can see some 4-5 fish hiding in the muddy waters amongst the roots. But apart from that, most of the time I've been diving, so PLENTY of fish!   And, forgot to mention: the mangrove seedlings there were way to big to consider bringing some back home... Sorry.

    N.monks?

Yep, THAT is the page you wanted! Time ago I saw it disappearing, and he replied providing the alternative link. Pity the new format of the Forum has removed the subtitle of threads, my post of the time has lost the "Where are Neale's pages??".   Yep, pity he's not around....   Cheers

December 2013 - Tank Of The Month Competition Entries

LOL  I have asian water grass in there that has really nice roots but in all reality in this pic...most of the foliage that is showing is actually where the hygro is so overgrown that it has rooted several times off each stem and has created quite a surface cover.  LOL     I love it! It has...

...and more, this time from Fiji! A few underwater pics, although in poor visibility (tide was going down).

    External Filter Question

Mines just taste it, and then reject it. I guess it depends on the species, I have carnivores. Herbivores may like it.

    Conversion

    I assume with Gms you mean grams (symbol g). Here's what I found: 1000 μS·cm–1 = 640 mg·l-1. Source is here.

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

Indeed! I believe they can be fed crickets or other small insects. Have you tried that?   I'm in Fiji right now, looots of mangroves here. I hope the place I'm going tomorrow will allow access, and perhaps collection of some seedlings.  If not, I'll at least enlarge my photo collection!

How did it go? F8 is going to be my next fish, for sure!

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

Nope, no skippers.... I wanted them so much, but I'd been recommended not to put them in a tank with any other fish, so I opted for what I have now. Originally I had the 3 archers and a bunch of Parambassis ranga, which never grew enough to be safe with their big companions. Indeed, they died...

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

Sure thing. I'm flying to Fiji tomorrow, there are not red mangroves there, but another species of Rhizophora. I'll check custom regulations, and if allowed, you'll get your share!   Wow, your BBG looks big! How big is it?   Cheers   Maurizio

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

I pick my seedlings myself, since my job takes me to the tropics 2-3 times a year. I am right now in Cabo Verde. No mangroves here, though....

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

You gotta be kidding me... Wow, Mads, this is SO cool!   So, you've got THAT THING inside your tank? That would even facilitate building and stabilizing the slope of your beach.   However, this of course subtracts space in the tank... But then we would be back to the external reservoir, which is...

    Brackish Tidal Tank With Gobies

You set a separate reservoir/sump, with two pumps connected to timers: 4 times a day one of them moves the water from one into the other tank.   That's one way.

    My Mudskipper Paludarium

And then who's gonna get you your yearly batch of Reddies, hm??   Well, the Arctic holds more fascination for me than any tropical sun-boring-bathed paradise, believe me (perhaps because I'm Sicilian). I actually have in mind Greenland for next winter holidays (enjoyed it in summertime, now I...

    My Mudskipper Paludarium

I'm going to the Fiji islands by mid-November, they have no Reds down there but loads of other Rhizophoraceae, if I recall. I'll see what I can get for you!   If not, early 2014 I should go back to Brazil.

    My Mudskipper Paludarium

Hey HX, damn pest you've got there...   Why don't you still give it another try with the solutions proposed above, before really going Torquemada...?   No, haven't tried yet your Samolus, sorry... Thing is, I have no emersed land, so I assumed it was a waste.   Of the batch of Reds I sent some...

October 2013 - Fish Of The Month Voting Poll

I have archers, so I know the feeling!   In this case my thought was, well, a spider is a carnivore, so he somehow "must know" what it is like, being eaten!

    Creating An Archerfish Shooting Range!

Long time since Shovelman has been around the forum...   I am now in exactly his same need, that is, vertically extending the volume of air above the tank (in my case to give room to my growing mangroves, and raise the lights, which are causing too many diatoms). He eventually made it with...

    Nitrate Woes

Indeed. Light is the clue. Thanks levahe. For the time being I simply set back the plexiglas cover where fake mangrove leafs hang from, and that has already had a visible effect. Next step will probably be to raise up the whole lid & lights, since the mangroves will soon need more aerial space...

    My Mudskipper Paludarium

Cheers HX, pity to hear bad news from you.   I had no idea of what that stuff is, so I took a look around, and Wikipedia mentions it can be controlled using biopesticides: no idea, but maybe these - based on fungi - can be used in an aquarium?   Best of luck   Maurizio   PS: any luck with the...

    Planting Brackish Aquaria

Depending on the forum/thread (couldn't figure yet what the real rule is), you can directly upload a small picture file in your post. The most common approach, however, is to link to an external database (see the aquarium photo forum, they explain how to do that), using the Image button above...

    Mudskipper Tank

WOW, mangroves! Mines are doing quite well, now. One is really big, and soon I'll have to elevate the tank lid!   In my (b)log below you'll find a number of videos of my archers shooting, as well as some pics of my mangroves. Everything quite old, though: I got so depressed with my diatom...

    Planting Brackish Aquaria

Mods may want to move this into a new thread within the same forum!   Not a Dane myself (Italian), but living in DK since quite some years.   Obviously evaporation may alter your salinity, but it should be really in large amounts to make a difference. Otherwise, no, I stopped checking salinity...

    Planting Brackish Aquaria

Hej Mads, and welcome to TFF!   I bet you mean 1.003-1.005. My tank is at SG 1.002 @ 25 C.   Remember that in most cases brackish fish don't care of small variations, which do happen all the time in the real environment. As for the plants, it's another matter, and surely those values are the...

    Nitrate Woes

Many thanks levahe!   I will definitely take your advice, and go that way. I have indeed shielded my lights for a while time ago, to calm down my archers, so I can try the same agan, or better buy some lower intensity bulbs.   I have about 150 l in a 120x40x30. You mentioned in about the same...
