i'm going to be doing a blackwater tank with a sand substrate, wood and leaf litter, maybe some bucephalandras planted on the wood too, was just wondering what are some good species for a blackwater tank? tank is a juwel lido 120litre cube type tank. i have already decided to get a good sized...

Water changes are the shortest part of my fishkeeping routine, and very easy, you can do it whilst listening to something or watching something if you have a python or a hose system.

i think i am a little more OCD when it comes to my tanks byron, i could spend endless hours just making sure there is no algae to be seen haha, if i had a 200gal i would hate to think how much time i would spend cleaning it, as it is i have a 130litre a 113 litre and a 30litre, getting a another...

go for something that suits how much time you can dedicate to it, the bigger the tank the more maintenance cleaning vaccing poop etc etc.. you get the picture haha.

    Tank Upgrade - Complete Revamp

That tool is actually quite advanced byron, it takes into account the total cubed measurement of the fish, and the filtration method, also it highlights incompatibilities in tank size and fish suitability, very good for a simple calculator.

Some fish shops are terrible, they will sell you anything, good on you for doing your homework! it will make you a better fishkeeper in the long term. be careful with bettas and cherry shrimp, the betta can and will predate on cherry shrimp, so they either need a TON of hiding space, IE...

    My 7 Gallon Tank

You are right essjay, i looked at that stocking calculator, and i wouldn't recommend danios on anything other than a temporary basis, they will outgrow that tank by a long way, you could keep a lovely betta in that tank though and it would be very happy, the other option is to get a bigger tank ;)

Mini aquascape empty jar bottle with betta will make you awe

He is a very good quality betta actually, do you have video or picture of him in a larger space, the glass distorts the view and you can't see him properly, he looks almost show quality.

http://aqadvisor.com/ the best tool around currently for determining your stocking, make sure to put in your filter and tank size, it will even highlight incompatibilities between species.

    Guppy Launch!

Just find a way to chill out the flow a bit, because as it stands now, those guppies are getting thrown into the far end glass at a very high speed, it could lead to issues such as spinal damage, hole in the head disease and internal bleeding. all for the sake of just turning the filter speed...

    Tank Upgrade - Complete Revamp

http://aqadvisor.com/ go here for stocking simulations and testing, it's a really good utility. you can't assume anything when it comes to light units, it could be any size, T8's are more than enough to grow any low tech plant you want, just have to make sure you get bulbs in a 4000 kelvin to...

    My 7 Gallon Tank

http://aqadvisor.com/ this is a great website for testing your stocking, the algae eaters are great when they are young, but as it becomes older it will grow too big for your tank, it will get lazy and only eat food you put in rather than algae, and it could also try to feed off the smaller...

    Seeding new filter

I've always been a 2 week guy, or a week and a squeeze, i mean you can actually just straight squeeze your main filter sponges onto the sponge filters and run from day one, it just means daily water changes for the first 2 weeks.

    Slowing down the filter

Put the floating plants in a small circle of airline piping that is connected together, it will keep the plants in one place and hopefully away from the filter, raise the water level to the spray bar if possible, and like seangee said, you can poke the holes a little larger to slow the flow.

    Seeding new filter

i have got 3 different ones, i have the cheapo 30W LED floodlight from amazon, and a clip on light for aquariums that is 9W from amazon, and a 20W LED luminaire, all were very cheap and will grow plants and stuff, love LED's as they take so much less power.

    Seeding new filter

personally i would wait a week or 2, and then i would coincide moving them to the new tank with cleaning your filter on your main tank, and do a "squeeze" over the top of the sponge filters from your sponges in the main tank. you can't beat a good old sponge filter though, lot of bang for your...

also if it were a swim bladder problem it wouldn't just go away all of a sudden, if a fish has a swimbladder problem it is usually disabled by it and cannot maintain propper equilibrium.

Get some more rocks and caves and stuff, it will limit aggression in the tank, and will give everybody a place to hide out and rest, get an aquarium test kit, and test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, maybe PH too if your water is soft usually you will have to buffer it with malawi...

Trigonostigma hengeli pairing up with trigonostigma heteromorpha?

It leads to much more reading than just this though... opens up new avenues of intrigue for myself, from what i have read so far, they do occur in the wild together in places, but i cannot find any articles on crossbreeding in the species and for there to only be 4 distinct lineages then they...

Trigonostigma hengeli pairing up with trigonostigma heteromorpha?

hahaha yeah from what i read he said that all 4 species are from the same ancestor which means they could all interbreed from what i know, mine are only exhibiting behaviours related to pairing though, ive only seen the hengeli try to hug the rock a few times, they are ignoring the java fern...

Trigonostigma hengeli pairing up with trigonostigma heteromorpha?

Very informative, thanks a lot byron you answered pretty much everything i was thinking about, if they do spawn im not purposely raising the fry, so if any do survive it will be through luck rather than judgement, obviously i would never take hybrids anywhere near an LFS.

    Hi I'm new

Only if fully grown, and even then i don't think it is that simple, they can be very hard to sex, i don't keep cichlids though so i can't help much more, maybe ask on a cichlid only forum?

Definitely a mouthful , i know livebearers can cross breed no problem, was just wondering about rasboras really, mine have never showed any breeding behaviour before this in 4 years, just happy to see them courting and twirling together.

I love your replies flutter, i always forget cycling! i have a brain like a sieve, floating pellets was my initial thought, but it could definitely be a reaction to water conditions, test your water straight away, and if you havent already carry out a 25% water change.

Colorfull fish to add with Severums

Suitable tank mates for your goldens include other cichlids such as the flag cichlid, Aequidens species such as the blue acara, eartheaters such as the pearl chichlid, and large angelfish. In addition, they can do well with catfish species such as those from the Loricariid and Callichyid...

Trigonostigma hengeli pairing up with trigonostigma heteromorpha?

I'm witnessing some breeding behaviour with my rasboras whilst i have them in a small holding tank, funnily enough the only real pair that has formed are from different species, (harlequin and hengeli) will these actually breed? i can't find much information on the subject.

It's all about striking a balance, as you have sand in the tank it makes sense to keep a lot of open space :) maybe just fill on the left side and leave the front right side open for fishies! wish you the best of luck. Regards, Gus.

Replacement powerhead for an aquastyle 380

The easiest way is going to be to just replace the manufacturer part and use the in built filter system, less fuss overall really, and if you buy cheap you will always buy twice, stump up the $35AU and get the propper part for the tank, it will save you trouble and effort in the long run...

    Overstocked?

In my opinion, i would either go one of two ways, get another dwarf gourami of a different sex, and return the tetras, or return the gourami and get some more tetras of both kinds like mikey said. the tetras really need to be in a group of 6 or more but if you had a reasonable amount of both...

Go easy on the lighting and ferts at first aswell, those plants don't need loads of either, i would recommend a 6-8 hour photoperiod, and if your light has a dimming mode to have a "peak" period in the middle of your light cycle, whilst having it lower either side a bit like the noon sun you...

    Planted Juwel Rio 180 Journal

Lovely stuff, you are well on your way to a nice low tech tank, i would recommend water wisteria, hygrophila polysperma, Ceratopteris thalictroides and rotala rotundifolia for stem plants, all really easy to grow. As far as planting shorter plants in the back, it doesn't work long term for the...

    Yet Another New Guy

6 hrs a day is a good minimum photoperiod, if they are dimmable then run 50% for 3 hrs 100% for 1 hr then 50% for 3 hrs again, otherwise just go 6 hrs and go to 7 or 8 after 2 weeks if you are not seeing an algae outbreak, change your water regularly too. :)
