The new debate [Are floating plants technically semi-aquatic?]

I've had grass grow into my pond and transition to emersed growth and duckweed grow up out of my pond and transition to grow terrestrially.

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

Within Canada probably Meres Island, but Drumheller as a kid I remember the hoodoos and fossil parks were really cool. Meres Island has bioluminescent plankton in the waters, so the waves glow blue as they roll in. Such an incredible phenomenon to witness. Outside of Canada would be Greece...

    Elephantnose with black shark

At that age, I've successfully grown them out in a fish store setting with yasuhikotakia modesta, dawkinsia filamentosa, and trichopodus pectoralis.

    Elephantnose with black shark

I just assumed you were keeping the labeo in the 8 foot already. Mine grew pretty fast, not like a red tail catfish or arapima, but still respectably quick. They're like a super sized Epalzeorhynchos bicolor on average, with individuals ranging from semiaggressive and being intimidated by other...

    Elephantnose with black shark

I'd steer away from mixing a labeo chrysophekadion with more gentle fish like your elephant and butterfly. Intimidation alone will probably be an issue with size differences.

I don't think I've ever heard someone say bro is offensive, I'd love if you could elaborate. I live in a pretty diverse city and haven't come across this before. My social circle has Nicaraguanse, Iranian, Indian, Filipino, Fijian, white, Chinese, and other mixes. Not looking to fight, just...

My extreme DIY journey from rookie to almost pro. Low Iron glass aquarium/sump. Anoxic Filtration System. Dr. Kevin Novak.

Haven't heard of oil-dri being used to make an anoxic filter before, I'm intrigued. I was only familiar with a certain brand of cat litter being suitable (of course the name escapes me).

"fish" made from human stem cells.

Read here. What a time to be alive, someone's stem cells have granted them the form of fish. In actuality though, this is an exciting step towards biomechanics!

Found some pictures of my bichirs on MFK and figured I'd share them here.

Thanks! They're one of my favourite groups of fish. I thinned out my p. ornatipinnis population to just the big girl with the black speckle, but otherwise yes. Yes, it's a liberifer harassing a rotkiel. Ended deciding I didn't agree with mixing Central and Southern American cichlids, so I...

    Horrid sleep schedule

I've tried using an app that came with this smart watch my girlfriend bought me, but it's incorrectly identifying when I'm sleeping and over estimating my sleep. The sleep debt I carry is powerful haha. I end up accidentally napping for an hour or two and then incapable of sleeping later on...

Since I've been home all week sick with covid my sleep schedule is entirely wrecked. It's 5am and I haven't had a lick of sleep. I'm just starting to get tired, even though on a work day I'd be leaving for work in just over an hour. It's already hard enough to keep a sleep schedule with adhd...

Making waves in a literal sense

It's a response to the forums dialogue about the potential to have the American government ban the vast majority of animals in our hobby, and how there is little response that shows a willingness to fight it. A demonstration that one person can make a difference.

    Pictus Catfish

You don't clip anything, it's like wiping something off your hand using the edge of a surface. You gently catch the infection on the between the open blades and it comes off without any resistance.

    Pictus Catfish

You can manually remove the infection. I have an old pair of scissors at work I use to gently run pictus fins through to remove infections like this. Pictus catfish are probably the most frequently injured fish in the hobby because of their fins. Very clean water, a low stress environment, and...

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

The facility I work at, we do amazing work with the fish we receive. I'll pack orders for fish stores for 8-12 hours and then tackle husbandry even though I'm exhausted and we worked on the fish before shipping. We put husbandry first, but without antibiotics our hands are tied in certain...

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

Yes, my comment doesn't pertain to America, but topical for the subject as far as the hobby goes. Wouldn't work in British Columbia. Federally, they've banned nearly all medication, with only a vet seeing the specific animal can prescribe antibiotics and the like. I work in one of the largest...

Not to disagree with your sentiment, but big cats generally sleep their life away regardless of being in captivity/native habitat. They're apex predators that conserve energy by lounging most of their life. Not sure about species of bear or region you live, but bears up north would just be...

If I boil it, can I put a piece of driftwood I found in my freshwater aquarium?

On topic for collecting driftwood: Try to avoid softwoods as they'll decompose quickly. That's old enough where you shouldn't have to worry about associated resins/sap from certain softwoods. Most of my driftwood is collected, including some well aged softwood. Only annoyance is the amount of...

    ID BICHIR? PLS? :(:

I find adults are the individuals that are successfully kept together. If you were to starve them, then you would increase the risk of cohabitation, but in general large and well-fed fish won't be problematic. Though they need to be given the appropriate amount of space for the fish not to be...
