    Heater. How many watts?

An old rule of thumb says Watts = 3 to 5 times Gallons. A 300 - 500 watt heater is fine in a 29 gallon until it sticks on one night and cooks your fish. A lot of people use two small heaters instead of one big one to avoid this problem.

    Angelfish type?

Certainly not Altums. Look like a standard domestic Silver.

    Angel fish

They look a little young. How long have you had them? Angels take 8 months to a year to get old enough to spawn. Almost impossible to tell male from female until they spawn. Even then hard to tell until the eggs hatch as sometimes two females will pair up and lay eggs.

    Pleco appetites??

Feed him Zucchini. Cut it into quarters and rubber band it to a weight. I use chunks from a broken terra cotta flower pot. Dip out with a net after a day or two if he doesn't eat it all. Algae wafers will also work.

Have you guys had issues with build up, on your heater surface, on hard water tanks???

OK didn't realize the heater was that big. The biggest I have is 250W. If you have well water I suspect the heaters are burning the calcium/lime in the water onto the glass. I have that problem with my water heater, but that is a 4500w heater so not to applicable to your problem. But it says to...

Have you guys had issues with build up, on your heater surface, on hard water tanks???

I would tend to believe that it is the guards that is the problem. I have PH 8.3 with KH and DH way over 300 ppm. I have had heaters in some tanks for close to 10 years and have never seen buildup like that. Either the guards or you need to get a different kind of heater.

Does anyone have know about the Angelfish called Blue California?

Ok so the source i looked up which said pinoy was pb/pb should have said philppine instead of pinoy. Thanks. No not necessarily Pinoy are Philippine Blue (pb.pb) except with and added Dark gene. You could say all Pinoy are Philippine Blue pb/pb but not all Philippine Blue pb/pb are Pinoy.

Does anyone have know about the Angelfish called Blue California?

The Philippine Blue gene is noted as pb. Mr Keneddy (I probably mis-spelled it) Discovered the pb gene in some platinums he was working with. He line bred them and cross bred them to prove the gene. That is what I meant by developed. No one "invents" genes, they exist naturally. A Pinoy is a...

Does anyone have know about the Angelfish called Blue California?

Blue Diamond, California Blue, etc. Are all made up names to try to sell fish to unsuspecting buyers. Blue is blue (pb/pb) developed by Keneddy in the Phillipines and called Phillipine Blue. There is no Pinoy gene. A Pinoy is a Phillipine blue fish with a dark gene. (D/+,pb/pb) or (D/D,pb.pb)...

    Bristlenose Vegetables

I have been feeding Zucchini and other vegetables for years and have never washed or boiled them. Boiling just makes them softer and they deteriorate quicker. Yes they like green beans too especially right out of the can. Highly unlikely that food meant for humans would be allowed to have...

    Bristlenose Vegetables

I have lots of Bristlenose. Zucchini is their staple diet. Cut the stem off, cut them into quarters and rubber band them to a rock and drop in. Replace after 48 hrs if they don't eat it all. After a while you will know how much they eat in a day or two. Adjust the amount you put in accordingly/

Asking anyone with planaria experience to help!

Fenbendazole. Safe Guard or Panacur dog dewormer. 0 .1 gram per10 gallons. Kills them overnight with no side effects to fish or plants. Does not harm 3 day old Angelfish. I don't have shrimp so I don't know about them.

Albino Bristlenose - Red on head

Sounds like a male. The males get a red patch on top of their head. If he doesn't have bristles on his nose yet he is probably a young one.

    Feeding brine shrimp eggs???

Two 2 liter soda bottles with the bottoms cut off and turned upside down with an airline are much better. A lot cheaper and you can adjust the size of the hatch to match the need, The hatched babies are better than the de-capsulated ones because the movement attracts the baby fish and triggers...

    males bristlenose not guarding cave

The females will always breed with the dominate male. If you want them to breed with the longfin you will have to take the shortfin out of the tank.

    Angelfish Spawning

Those nets are notorious for allowing bigger fish to suck out the little ones. Much better to keep them in a 2-1/2 gallon or one of the plastic breeder boxes where the babies can't be gotten out. But if you have no other choice that net is better than letting them in the main tank.
  18. G

    Angelfish Spawning

Highly unlikely to get any fry in a community tank. They eat the eggs to protect them from the other fish. Even if some do hatch the other fish will eat them. best thing is to put the parents in their own tank. You can separate the eggs from the parents if you want. A gallon glass jar works fine...

any more discussion on the smallest proper sized shoal for Angel Fish??? or the smallest aquarium you should be allowed to keep angel fish in

It is almost impossible to get a group of all 5 males or females. Very few people can sex them that accurately. A group of males will be fine once the pecking order has been established, females too. For breeding, have some plants and other decoration in the tank to form hiding places as needed...

any more discussion on the smallest proper sized shoal for Angel Fish??? or the smallest aquarium you should be allowed to keep angel fish in

There is a rule of thumb that says 10 gallons of water per adult Angelfish. So yes 5 Angels will be OK in a 45 gallon tank. I have 5 in my 45 gallon with no problems. Sometimes you get advice from a lot of people that have never raised Angels.

    Breeding corydoras

Some are easy to breed, some are much harder. Basically, the ones ou can buy in the local fish store are the easiest. Albino and Bronze being some of the easiest.

What Ichthys said. Almost impossible until they drop their breeding tubes to spawn. Sometimes the adults with the ugly hump on their head are males, not always.

How to get rid of hydra?

Fenbendazole (Safeguard or Panacur dog dewormer) available at petco, petsmart, etc. Dose at 0.1 gram per 10 gallons. Kills them all overnight and does not hurt anything else in the tank.

Is my angel a male or female

Yours seems a little young to even guess. Give it a while to mature. Angelfish are almost impossible to sex until they spawn. You have to observe the breeding tubes or watch which one lays the eggs and which one fertilizes them.

    Questions on angelfish

I have just the opposite situation. I have been raising Angels for about 10 years and I have noticed it is the Male in a pair that is aggressive. The females usually just hang around the spawning site or chase other females away. The males are the aggressive ones and chase anything that comes near.

    Angel fish swimmers dying

Best advice I can give. Be sure the 2-1/2 is clean when you put them in. Feed them newly hatched baby brine shrimp, don't overfeed. Look for orange bellies to be sure they are eating. Have a cycled sponge filter in the 2-1/2. Put an extra air stone or open air line in for extra oxygen. 20 - 25%...

    Questions on angelfish

With 6 Angels there is a 97.6 percent chance of at least one pair. Hang in there for a while yet. Angels tend to get territorial. One of them will pick a spot and keep all others away. When a pair forms they will pick a spot and keep all the others at the other end of the tank. Their actions...

    Angelfish shallow or deep water?

The 60 liter (15 gal.) is a little small for a pair of Angels long term. The 90 liter (23 gal.) would be much better . That would be OK for a pair of Angels. Of course bigger is always better.

    40 gallon with angelfish?

Lots of advice from lots of people that don't know Angelfish and like to repeat things they hear on the net. Yes an Angelfish or two would work in a 40 breeder. It is not too shallow. And yes a single Angelfish would be great in there. A lone one will experience no psychological harm whatsoever...

Starting guppy breeding. Help please :)

I have heard guppy breeders say you need 8 tanks per strain if you want to do it right. If you let them "free breed" the line will deteriorate and lose much color. To breed properly you need a breeding tank, a tank to raise the babies, a tank to raise males you want to keep, a tank to raise...

    Bristlenose genetics

Longfin gene is dominant. Depends on if the longfin has one or two doses of the gene. If one you will get 50% short fin and 50% long fin. If two you will get all long fin.

    egg cleaning for corydoras

No need to do water changes on eggs. Only reason to do water changes on eggs is to get the methelyne blue out before the fry hatch. I let fry hatch in the Fungus clear then start water changes. Have never seen any harm to fry even after 1- 2 day exposure. I've never seen any evidence of harm...

You can use Jungle Fungus Cure tabs. One half a tab per gallon works good. It does not harm the fry like Methelyne blue does.
