    Stocking a tank.

Gouramis are typically unpredictable but hopefully yours will remain docile as it grows, particularly as your other fish aren't similar to him. I would say you're just about fully stocked for now. Smaller fish need less room than larger ones i.e. a 6 inch fish will place more demands on the tank...

Is fish-keeping harder and diseases more prevalent now than it was 10 years ago?

Yes, fish definitely not as strong as they were back in the 1980's because of the way they are farmed and fed with growth hormones. They don't ultimately grow as big either. Fancy fishes have been over developed and I find that most of the traditionally easy fish, such as livebearers, are offen...

4 dead fish at the same time same species HELP!!’

Definitely sounds like poisoning as so sudden and affecting specific species. Years ago I lost all 4 of my large angelfish after changing some water the day before. Interestingly my neighbour had exactly the same experience on that same day so we concluded that the water company must have put...

Just picked up on this thread. I don't think that the fact that your softener was wrongly programmed would have effected what came out of the tap. Once all of the calcium ions have been exchanged for sodium ions the softener won't add more sodium ions to the water. Anyway, being programmed for...

Over the back or canister filter?

I disagree with Utahfish, I believe plants do require a regular lighting cycle and will suffer if you supply it in increments. It doesn't need to be perfect as it wouldn't be in nature, but it can't be haphazard. Overfeeding is the main issue here however and there is no point putting in extra...

Are these snails? If so safe or not

Yes, they are snails. They're not harmful but you could end up with a lot of them if you're not careful. If you like them, leave them, but if you get too many or if want to step on it now, remove them. I would squash them against the glass and let the fish eat them.
