    Algae ID and Help Please

I had various other species of shrimp in my tank along with 6 otos. They didn't make any progress destroying the algae at all. They did eat some of course but it grew quicker thaqn it could be devoured. The Amano were terrific. I'd just try a couple to see if the puffers go for them. If not you...

    Thinking of a rack...

I hope someone has a solution rather than pointless jokes. I thought about a similar thing myself some time ago but the one thing that put me off it, apart from the wife, was the uncertainty of the floor strength. I'd hate to fill a rack with tanks full of water and see it crash into the kitchen.

    Algae ID and Help Please

I've just become a firm fancier of Amano shrimp for algae. Not sure what sort you have there mind you, but whatever algae was in my tank which was mostly hair algae and damn difficult to get rid of, the Amano devoured it in no time. Don't know if Amano are puffer safe but they do get quite big...

    Recommended pH?

Water paramaters aisde, the question of centrepiece fish is something that needs a rethink as far as I'm concerned. It may be well intended as seeing a lovely larger fish, or a pair of them seems to be a nice thing to do. I've done the same sort of thing myself on a few occasions and have backed...

    Is this blue green algae

I have some of it on stones and wood in my own tank. It is really cool looking and not the usual algae that gets out of control. It's more like moss at about 2 - 3 mm tall.

Help me with my unintentional negligence

I place the end of the hose in a net that is used to catch the fish. It's saved many a small shrimp from an early demise.

I've already tried all the basic recommendations

Amanos are like hogs in a potato field. They cleared my 75ltre tank which had loads of hair algae on plants, wood, heater etc in about 4 weeks. 4 of them and they have really grown as a result. Less lights also helps and in fact if you can do without, if the tank gets a bit of natural daylight...

    Daphnia culture

I started with a couple of pouches of them from my LFS that I dropped into a 5 gallon container that I also drop my plant cuttings into to get more growth. Slow start but each week I see new numbers and I've now stated netting them to feed the fish. I also discovered small red worms among dead...

    Amano magic

Ever since I set up my aquascape tank 75 litre, I struggled with hair algae, more likely than not due to the rich nutrient source from the aquasoil even though there are loads of plants. Things got somewhat worse when I placed a Chihiros Vivid 2 as the lighting. I used to spend several sessions...

'fraid not. Too much faffing about and I don't think shrimp would survive any extended shipping times. It has to be collection only. Sorry

Insects on floating plants and support bar??

If you do get worried, then put a surface feeder into the tank. Endlers aren't great at catching swimming or moving targets. I have some golden tetras and I've even seen one of them leap out the water to catch a small fly as it went overhead.

Can earth worms be fed to aquarium fish?

Well I do use them, or did until I got a very active whiteworm culture going. I only ever caught the small newly developed worms up to an inch long and fed them whole to the likes of my firemouths and other larger fish. They loved them. No white stuff oozed out of them, and being a fisherman I...

UK - Northumbrian Water Reports 2020 and 2021 - INCREASES in hardness that are worth knowing

I'm in Peterlee and belive me when I say I just about chew the water. The pH is usually above 8.5 and the GhH is normally around 456 ppm. That's why i set up a rainwater barrel, but then came a loss of the Castle Eden pumping station making them draw water fromsome other source and the pH was at...

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

I bloody hate Amazon and how it has become the overriding retailer for many things, even though it doesn't actually stock most of them but takes a commission from genuine retailers. Jeff Bezos, with I think the largest private superyacht in the world, makes money from everyone then does naff all...

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

Those are the ones Wills. Great little buggers that love to just jerk cm by cm along the tank then pull back under the central root/branch system where a little cave was built in. As for feeding, they are a bit too conservative for my liking. They aren't overly keen on dried flake or pellet food...

    Glass cup

I have a couple small plastic cups that are planted with emersed plants that are growing nicely but upwards above the water where they'll eventually flower beautifully. Moss seems to be about the only stuff that won't float but if I were to opt for that I'd probably go for coral moss/Asian...

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

SeriouslyFish seems to work on the inch per gallon basis though which is a good idea for larger fish that produce a lot of waste. Nano fish produce very little so can be stocked in larger numbers, or in smaller tanks unless there's likely to be nasty territorial behaviour. Just a generic point...

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

Tank size is 45 wide by 30 tall and 28 deep but size doesn't really come into it for such small fish. The Badis don't really swim around. They just creep along with short jerky movements so don't need space to swim as do the Tetras. However the Green Neon Tetras are very happy as they spend a...

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

You know what? I haven't a clue. I put it as a topic earlier seeking identification but I don't think it was resolved. All I know is that it took a bit of time to establish from seed grown emersed in a tub, then once planted at around half a cm height it just shot up. The tank has CO2 stream and...

Really good app for aquascape planning

It's something for the kids to play with. I tried it but it's way better to get along to a good scaping retailer and put the rocks, wood plants together on a test bench set up to the right size. I did try that app but got little out of it personally.

Goody Goody: DARIO DARIO are GO

Nano tank news : Just got the scissors out to cut back the plants at the front of the tank and I just saw at least half a dozen Badis Badis fry of small size but way beyond egg yolk stage and swimming freely out of the way of the parents among the plants. I'm not really surprised as the parents...

    Food supply

Let's just say -- my missus buys way too much cream and I hate to see it go to waste. I've just split a culture this morning too and some of the worms are a decent size. Must be the feeding on fatty food. So, any takers for a good supply of worms then?

    A new Nano tank

Just checked the water in the tank and I need to get the parameters right for the fish before I put them in. I used a mix of dechlorintated tap water and rainwater for the 1st fill, around 60/40tap/rain. The GH is showing at 360 this morning and the pH is around 8.5. The water authority has gone...

    Krib ate 6 neons

Try this, seriously. Get a small hand mirror, the sort of things you get in ladies handbags. Stick it onto the front of the tank, facing inwards and sit and watch. Tetras are acting weird

Logical thoughts here. 1st, the ones that were playing dead. Fish don't do that. Nor do animals either as it shows weakness and gives predators the idea that their next meal is just waiting for them. If they play dead it's more likely than not that they were showing end of life symptoms...

    A new Nano tank

Just a quick update. I mentioned 3 things in my previous posts about equipment for this tank. I planned to buy things that were needed from UK suppliers but they were either too expensive, or not available in the UK. For these I did an Aliexpress purchase, reluctantly I may add. The 1st, or so I...
