How long should I leave on the air pump?

Some of the pumps have an output control. If you have one of those adjust the airflow to acceptable levels. I totally agree that the stop/start is due to it getting too hot.

Opinions on Canister vs other types of filtration

That comment was in relation to post no. 2 from @TheCountryGoldfish Running hot water over filter medium will kill the beneficial bacteria, as would even using coldwater straight from a tap.

    Mollies Having to many babies

As for live algae eaters, I almost gave up when I had a hell of a job getting algae under control and even had an absolute nightmare with hair algae. Then I got a few Amano shrimp. With those in the tank and a really reduced number of hours of lighting things came back to normal quite quickly...

Attempted pics of psuedomugli luminatus/red neon rainbow fish

I'm giving up on my pseudo's @AdoraBelle Dearheart My nano tank is full of lush plants and even by itself is a pleasure to behold, but the fish are escaping left, right and centre. I don't always find the remains either at first but do find the odd one from time to time. Even a couple of endlers...

    Mollies Having to many babies

Same, same. I learned about Mollies insane reproduction rate the same as you. I concur that if you like them go with the one sex. I didn't know it, but I visited a LFS the other day and saw some in a marine tank. The shopkeeper said they are easily acclimated from freshwater over an afternoon by...

    Best snail control

If they are snails on rails, ie the common bladder snail that moves like it has been turbocharged, you have one hell of a job getting rid of them. Squashing and denial of food along with assassin snails was my way to control them. I tried pea puffers but they also nipped the fish and took...

The perspex order should be with me today. Glass would have been nice but the perspex will do fine. Every tube of silcone I've seen in the DIY shops are useless as they are all toxic. I went ahead and ordered some non toxic which should also arrive today but now I'm coming across suggestions...

    Are we being conned?

My main consideration is to see if the test kit liquids are the same freshwater to marine. If so the it can't be anything else but a con. If it's labelled Marine and there's no difference it also breaches the trade description act I think. I can't remember exactly but I did read that Australia...

I'm going to email them again and give them a supposedly legitimate question they'll be pressed to answer. "Please could you help me. I have been testing my new marine tank with your NT Labs test kit without realising it was for freshwater only. I'm deeply concerned that I may have been guilty...

Finally, the world goverments begin to admit the UFOs.

I absolutely agree with the tremendous waste of money into research of galaxies so far away that even if one expoded it wouldn't affect this planet as it will already have been swallowed by a black hole, or or died at the demise of our sun. The amount of money being spent could very well make a...

    Fish ID please

Couldn't you just kiss him? Such a lovely looking fish. In the intersts of conservation it may well be that some breeder would pay to get it. Possibly be a good idea to Google for fish breeders or suchlike. You could make a deal to sort of let them have it with a promise to take one of the...

Finally, the world goverments begin to admit the UFOs.

You know.... I nevdr met an alien yet but I have seen one of their ships/crafts or whatever else you call them. Yeah, I know... Here's the incident: It was late autumn around 20 years ago. I had a Rottweiler that I walked several times a day. It was at around 8.30pm one very calm evening the...

    Are we being conned?

One of the reasons for an internal filtration system is that this is a pretty large tank for a start-up, by my thoughts anyway. By shortening the length it will be easier to landscape without spending an absolute fortune. I really want an impressive looking tank and just plonking a few bits of...

    Are we being conned?

In my ongoing arrangments to set up my first marine tank, I'm trying to put together most of the things I'm going to need. I've got an order placed for some items such as the black perspex for making the in-tank filtration system, and am looking at water test kits. I use the NT Labs kits for my...

As the beneficial bacteria needs food, then I suppose that flake fish food would be best. That's due to the likely presence of plankton in the seawater which I would like to keep alive. I'll make a start on this right away with even more rock going into the tank to build up as much as possible.

    Just thinking about it

I took a look into 4 LFS's yesterday for ideas on setting things up. One thing that struck me was that there's no difference in the bacteria between freshwater and marine. In fact a Google search shows that most liquid starters, even Prime is for use in both salt and freshwater. However I had...

Cheers Kiko but glass was considered but I can't use it. The tank has a rim that encroaches on the internal width so that I would need to bend the glass to get it in. I have cut glass before and it's slow but I would probably end up breaking at least one of the dividers. I have found some clear...

Anything small I can keep without a filter?

I'd just stick with a lovely looking shrimp, breeding them to sell or get store credit from your LFS. Something like Crystal shrimp perhaps.

OK. Out goes the vegetation. After one of the most painful nights sleep I've endured I think I may have cracked a rib or two falling on the rocks. I'm in agony. Serves me right. At 76 years old I'm taking too many risks, but although I creak a bit, my mind is still as agile as ever. Oh, how...

That sounds very well thought out. I'm considering whether or not to put an 11 ltr small tank refugium in the bottom of the cabinet though as a refugium seems to be a pretty important piece of the jigsaw. I have seached online for black 5mm thick perspex/acrylic sheet and it's not as easy as...

    Neocaridina shrimp worm

Nice looking tank. I wonder if it's not some sort of leach. Only a picture or video will help sort things out. I believe that if it's a worm then the tank inhabitants would grab at it and eat it. If you have some larger fish in another tank you could maybe transfer one or more into the tank to...

I think my best bet is to make the filtration system to fit in the left side of the tank. That side isn't really in view mostly as it's more or less against the wall except for a small amount. That being so, the tank width I plan on having after installation will be around 68cm and the depth will...

I've taken a couple of photo's so you can perhaps advise better on where an internal sump filtratio0n box could go. Looking at the tank from the front (there's a wall behind it so that's an obvious thing), the tank is on the only wall it will fit. To the left of it is a warm-air heater duct and...

adding buff sand to black sand

A mix of colours and sand sizes might not go well. The finer play sand will possibly sink below the black if the black has larger/heavier grains. I'd just do a full replacement. You could section the tank substrate with some sort of divider and replace one half, then do the other half later when...

    100 litre saltwater tank

I'm in a similar situation myself with my intentions of going into marine. If the 60cm tank is the Red Sea E170 it does kinda look nice and has all the bits you need including the filtration system and light. However at nearly £1300 it makes me wince. My current 120 ltr tank is 80cm wide...

So, and here's my probably totally wrong thoughts on bacterial growth. I can see that it can take some months, or at least an extended period of time, to get rocks and sand fully matured into being "live". That is to start from a zero bacterial growth into one that can truly be called "live rock...

So, early morning collection of fry seems good. Might be a way forward for a community tank then.
