I've always had issues with new cories, and after a bit of digging i found that they are probably stressed about my black sand. good thing is, i have some buff play sand lying around, and i washed some of it up to put in the tank
how should i go about adding a layer of the buff sand so the current cories that are adapted to black sand are not stressed?

A mix of colours and sand sizes might not go well. The finer play sand will possibly sink below the black if the black has larger/heavier grains.
I'd just do a full replacement. You could section the tank substrate with some sort of divider and replace one half, then do the other half later when the corys settle down a bit.

My 53 gallon has Kamishi black glass fine substrate and Kamishi natural sand.

Started off in life with the natural sand under the black glass

Now thoroughly mixed together thanks to the hooligan Cories
