    Leaches

I got one in a tank. I saw it swim off to the plants and I never saw it again. Not all leeches drink blood but if you see them, get them out. They don't add anything to a tank such as eating algae, and are unsightly.

Just a thought - taking the water....

I'm still very active in trying to get the exact water parameters for the various tanks I have. I have a rainwater barrel setup, as highlighted on previous posts and yeah...... it's raining now. However, as my tapwater has dropped to really much better chemistry levels, ie GH down to 170ish from...

I can't get green water to develop!

It doesn't happen quickly depending on how the culture was started. it's taken me about 5 weeks to get up to green water stage in my own bottles. How long it'll take for them to clear is beyond me but I'll stick with it and find out. I imagine you need the infusria for feeding fry. That's why I...

    New mollys and tank

And..... did you cycle the tank? Or did you just fill it and add the fish? Tell us how you set the tank up and if you have tested the water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Also what is the water GH you have as mollies don't like soft water

    Raising a tanks PH???

And mixing the water with rainwater or RO will bring both the GH, KH and also the pH down. As will the use of bottled water. I do a mix of them all to achieve the best possible results for each of my 7 tanks but the mathematics get a bit difficult at times.

Giant worm in tank should i be worried?

I doubt that it's predatory if it lives in the substrate. It's going to eat tank waste matter much like detritus worms and may even be one of them anyway.

Too much Almond leaves in my tank?

It only has a slow release of tanins and plant derivatives so it'll be fine.

    Guppy or Endler guppy?

Given that it was born of a guppy, it's unlikely to be an endler. There are many colour variations in the species and lackadaisical breeding and mix of fish species can throw up lots of different ones.

Bossy bugger: Green Neon Tetra bully

Yeah, the species is not regularly stocked in the local stores and I think most folk would pass them by thinking they were neon tetras. However the sheen on them is superb and although not too much green, they really sparkle especially when the sun shines through the window sideways onto the...

Bossy bugger: Green Neon Tetra bully

I've noticed of late there's one really bad piece of work among my green neon tetras. You'll soon see which one I mean here It's bigger than the rest but whether it's male or female is unknown. I suspect it's female with eggs inside. No matter what sex it is, it just bullies the hell out of them...

    Introduction Couwu

Guten Morgen mein Freund und willkommen. Nice to hear you. Please just ask away for anything you want to know. Whereabouts in Germany are you? I once lived in Nienburg and my son was borne at a hospital in Hanover many years ago. Tell us about your fish and tank(s)

How many guppies can I keep in a 10 gallon?

Hi Fish Dude. Am I right in thinking that you are new and have just tagged onto another thread to ask about your own fish selection? If so could you start a new topic for yourself so you'll be better informed. For what it's worth, guppies, albeit being lovely, are in need of more space than most...

    Tank photography and video cam

If you're into that kind of thing you could also livestream your tanks. I have a Twitch account that shows my own tanks, whichever one of them the webcam is placed in front of at any given moment. You need to download OBS Studio then get a Twitch account to get going.

    Help - trouble with neons

It has to do with water quality as far as I can see. How are you testing it, what kit do you use, and where do you get the water from? Even if the water parameters are OK any infection that is present wouldn't show up on the tests. For the good of those recently bought fish, don't mix them with...

I'm doing my head in: Northumbria Water messing with the supply

Now I'm confused. I did an ammonia retest on another sample and it shows as zero, then another test half an hour later with zero ammonia. I wonder if I used a tube that hadn't been properly washed or something. Anyway I'll just have to go with the flow and do a water change based on the later...

I'm doing my head in: Northumbria Water messing with the supply

Yeah thanks Essjay. I didn't wait long enough the first reading but the new one is correct and shows at around 3.0ish I've just emailed NWA about this. It may seem trivial to the average person but I know at least 3 LFS's that may have potential problems as they all tested the same as me with...

I'm doing my head in: Northumbria Water messing with the supply

Sod it. The water shows 0.2 ammonia. Is this fine? I'm changing from a zero reading in the tank so 0.2 may be stretching things. The other tests are: Nitrate nil, KH at 54pph (3 drops of liquid). So with pH of 6ish and GH of 176 it complicates life. WHOA - Hold that. Another time lapse of 5...

I'm doing my head in: Northumbria Water messing with the supply

For as long as I can remember, the tapwater here has been very high in GH at 437ppm and a high pH of around 8.5. I have sorted my fish between 7 tanks to allow me to mix water to get the best result for the species in each tank. Mainly that consisted of adding bottled Asda or Tesco water that...

    Ick? Nitrate poisoning? Tumors?

Can't help with the purchase of things as I'm in the UK however salt doesn't kill the snails. I have just had to use salt myself on a tank with snails in to treat fish showing white lumps, fungal sort of growth on the mouth etc. I believe it's worked as I can't see any further infection though...

dying Gourami - second in 3 weeks

Unfortunately this is not uncommon with Gouramis. I'm guessing it's the dreaded dwarf gourami disease that appears suddenly and kills off the fish. You may have the fish for a decent length of time then all of a sudden ----- WHAM. Anyway, the sick fish isn't going to make it so euthanise by...

    API tap water conditioner

That's exactly what I do with one of my small tanks. By pouring water in, even into a cup in the tank, the soil/substrate gets kicked up. I siphon using the 6mm tube from an airline. It just trickles in but it's fast enough for me. My other tanks I do the bucket fill. Beware overdosing the...

    Algae

I believe my problem relates to the aqua soil I used when setting the tank up a few weeks ago. Initially I got slime, ie biofilm on the glass, plants.etc. Then when that cleared, the hair algae took hold. At first I thought it was still biofilm and let it go so it got a hold and bloomed. Now I...

Finally, the world goverments begin to admit the UFOs.

Elon Musk is busy building and launching new inward-bound customs stations circling the Earth and presenting them as internet boosting sattelites. China sees through this and is supposedly seeking a way to cash in on the money or goods raised and to impose regulations on any "visitor" who wants...

Baby tears: tearing my hair out

What I read was that it's a good front of tank and carpet plant. I'd say it's more a background plant. I think I'll be moving some to tanks where fish need plants to browse through, lay eggs in or just be able to chill out among the leaves.

not exactly super new but wanting to try something new

In this mix, you have to think about the likelihood of a breeding explosion. I had Kribs and they are gorgeous however when they start breeding they go crazy. You can have your tnk overrun in no time. The fry are carefully herded around by the parents so any fish that goes near them will get...

Well I, for one, am a firm believer having seen a probable triangular UFO that flew very slowly overhead at around 200 feet. No noise at all and going so slowly it wouldn't have been an aeroplane. Had it been a helicopter it would have been noisy. I also believe that alien technology is being...

I have the NT Labs kit and to be honest I'm a bit miffed with it. They have put little thought into the use of it. For instance on the Ammonia test, each bottle requires a single drip from each of the 3 bottles. That way the bottles run out at pretty much the same time. Same for the Nitrate...

    One for the nerds

Now have several 5 ltr bottles filled and stored in the garage. The filters do a good job as the roof moss and other stuff doesn't get beyond the first sponge. I have ordered a 7W UV light today to place in the barrel itself and to be switched on for a couple of hours after each rainfall.

I have it too and it's a real bugger to get rid of. Winding it into a single string and pulling it, lifts plants from the woodwork or substrate. I have aquascape scissors to cut as much off as I can and I intend to do a major water change shortly where I'll have better access to it with a...

Cost of the Seneye isn't overly bad when you compare it with the API test kits, however it's not got a great deal to it.
