    BIG MISTAKE.

It's a hard lesson, but I think all aquarists go through this in one form or another at some point, where we lose everything due to some disaster whether it's our own doing, power outages, or whatever. My first, and only attempt, at a reef tank, went beautifully until I had to move across...

    Fish tank Background Ideas

I spray painted the back of my tank black (clean glass well first!)....looks great. My boyfriend loved the look, but was afraid to go permanent on his tank, so he just ordered a black background (like the rolled up type you can find at fish stores) from Amazon.

    Saying goodbye to my aquarium

Ellie, that was a lovely tank you had! I especially loved the overgrown part at the end. I hope you come back to the hobby in the future, I'm sure you will :)

Algae problem cant get rid of the green water no matter what we do! Feel like giving up!

Things that will help with clearing the algae: test your nitrates (once your tank has cycled - which it should be since it's 3 months old now). once ammonia and nitrites drop --> nitrates will climb. high nitrates will lead to algae bloom unless you have ample live plants in the tank to use...

Have any new fish purchases rekindled your passion lately?

I can't wait to get home to stare at them <3

Have any new fish purchases rekindled your passion lately?

Thanks for that information! I'm actually fine with the longer gestation period, I don't want to be overrun with them, but they sure are pretty :) I saw some fry hiding back in the tank that this pair came out of, but there was another orange sailfin female in there as well (that I didn't...

    Molly about to give birth

I agree with the others who said take her out of the box, sorry, it's very stressful to them. From their perspective they are "out in the open" with nowhere to hide while vulnerable and having babies. Better to let her have them in the tank, and if some get eaten, well...that's not the end of...

Have any new fish purchases rekindled your passion lately?

I have always been a snob toward platties and mollies...i mean for 20+ years i never owned any. I'm not trying to be a hater, but just never cared for the shape of their bodies and the thought of them breeding like bunnies was always a huge turn off. BUT yesterday, I was at the LFS and I saw...

    Hard algae?

Wow, interesting...so after it is done "sporing" do the leaves return to just the usual texture?

    Hard algae?

Can someone help me out gere.here.. I'm not sure if this is algae, but it's kinda hard and crunchy in texture and seems to be attacking only this one plant in a heavy planted tank. I took it out in case it wants to spread, but I don't see it on any other plants.

🐠 TOTM Vote Now - November 2022 Tank of the Month Contest (31 Gal & larger)

This is my 50 gallon tank in my bedroom. I bought it used off of Craigslist, it used to be a turle tank of some sort. I have a Hygger light, a fluval 107 cannister filter and a large sponge filter (in addition to the bio filter substrate, etc.) Anyway, I cycled this in August/September I think...

    Guppy sex ratio

Did you know it takes about 1/20th of a second for the male to "deposit" the sperm?

    Guppy sex ratio

Telling males from females is fantastically easy with guppies. The females have dark gravida spots near their vent. Typically the males are more colorful and have longer fins (but some good breeding has resulted in more colorful / long finned females too). I feel very sorry for your ONE female...

    Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis)

Also, I've seen the other comments here and just wanted to say that while it's never a bad idea to play it safe, I personally have never had a vampire shrimp climb out of a tank and both of my tanks have open areas (not FULLY enclosed)...also, my bettas and angel fish have never tried to eat my...

    Vampire Shrimp (Atya gabonensis)

I have 2 vampire shrimp in my 75 gallon, and 1 in my 50 gallon. They are perfectly peaceful, but do stay hidden much of the time. I love them anyway, it's fun to watch them hold their little "mitts" up in the air, filtering for food. I recently read that they like to live in groups, so I...

🐠 TOTM Herbibore - October 2022 Tank of the Month Winner (17 to 30 Gal)

Your tank is beautiful! I love the layering of different plant heights, colors, and textures. Mine is less than 2 months old, but I hope when they grow up and fill in - I'll have a similar look. Very inspiring, thanks for sharing 💚

    New to the hobby

Oh, sorry I misunderstood before. Well all that sounds awesome, I'm sure the zebra danios will love the added room to swim around. I used to have some, it's been many years ago (I'll have to get some soon! ;) but I remember several of them zooming about the tank together...they make a stunning...

    New to the hobby

I think what is happening is, as you said at the end of your last post - you're adding more ammonia than it can handle. Well, sort of. So, it's still converting the ammonia almost immediately but nitrite is lingering, just sound like you went beyond what your tank could currently handle. But I...

    First Tank

I know I'm a bit late, but with that deep substrate you have there (I approve!) plus lots of plants, I believe that once your tank is fully cycled - you will have enough stability and bacteria to support the original fish/shrimp combo that you wanted.

Welcome! Sorry you had a rough start, but honestly almost everyone does. The cycling process is some serious chemistry and most people don't understand it until they are forced to deal with the "emergencies". Based on your post, it sounds like you have a good handle on it now. My only...

How to entertain a betta fish?

As others have said, if he was enjoying hunting the snails I'd give him some small ones again in the new tank! My bettas love to swim at the top of my tank where I have branches with hornwort running through it. (See pic)

Guppy has been pregnant for 3 months and no fry. She’s been swimming in place. She has been rough and is going on 3 years old if that means anything.

Is she in a tank with other fish? Is there a safe place for her fry to be born? My bearing tank has lots of java moss for babies to hide in and I feed baby brine shrimp (to mom) when I think she is close, supposedly providing the "right environment and food" for babies helps encourage them to...
