    Can Tanins Be Removed?

To be honest, I tried purigen and it didn't work wonders for me. Water changes are the key and the tannins will eventually go, just make sure you soak in warm water for two weeks before putting it in the tank to get rid of the worse of the tannins. Do not using boiling water on the wood.

Can Anyone Identify What This Is?

Thanks for responses. I have been told that it may be a granular cyst, which although unsightly is harmless, won't get bigger and doesn't bother the fish. Anyone heard of this

    Can Tanins Be Removed?

I soaked my two large pieces for three weeks in hot water with regular changes. They were in the tank another two months before the tannins stopped. Tried carbon and a few other things which helped a bit, but the biggest help was regular water changes

Shall I Remove Decomposing Bubble Nest

I have mentioned in a previous post that my DG has been continuously maintaining an empty bubble nest, it has now been 3 weeks. This means that all the plant material he has gathered to build this nest is decomposing and going black. I am concerned this is adding a lot of bioload to the water...

What Made You Decide To Set Up An Aquarium?

I got one too many injuries playing rugby this year so wanted to find an interest that would occupy my more sensitive side. I remembered my fascination with my mums tank as a toddler, especially the excitement when the Khuli loach made an infrequent appearance, so decided to give it a go. I am...

    Stupid Question About Water Changes.

I might have a look at a nitrate reactor just to manage nitrate levels introduced with tap water that i need to use partially to keep pH & GH from dropping too low. I will still need to use the tap with an RO mix to keep tank pH to about 6.5. Could be a way forward for me but not replacing...

    Stupid Question About Water Changes.

Ive heard of these nitrate loving anaerobic bacteria, but I guessing you have to create a separate filter with no oxygen content to culture it, how is this done?

Best Way To Photograph Your Fish

I must admit I was surprised that there didn't seem to much on the forum for taking pictures of our obsessions, and I'm sure most people want to take a good quality photo to show off there fish/tanks to everyone on the forum. Would be good if we could get a guide together for those of who aren't...

Best Way To Photograph Your Fish

I think key with point and shoot is getting enough light into the top of the tank. A picture with the in built flash looks badly coloured and drab. No flash is too dark, no flash with a high ISO setting and quick shutterspeed is too grainy. So far the best setting is the underwater one, but...

    Stupid Question About Water Changes.

Great advice, thanks. So basically, premix my 15% PWC with two parts RO and one part tap and all is good. Just wish the water authority would get its finger out and lower the nitrate levels in their water

    Stupid Question About Water Changes.

Currently, weekly 15% PWC, one in three is tap water due to these high levels. When I add the tap water the tank changes from 6.5 to 6.8 pH, and the GH goes from 5 to 6. Do you think this is ok?

    Stupid Question About Water Changes.

Thought I'd ask as lincolnshire is heavy agriculture area and I am sure that hormones get into water courses and may be at a higher level than other places in the uk, this is probably why my tap water has such high nitrate nd phosphates. Stocking Advice?

I would get 6 long fin corys as they like to be in numbers, and they love routing around in sand substrate, sometimes they even bury themselves? Great fish to watch.
