Can Tanins Be Removed?

thanks alot guys the wood is defo to big to go in the toiloet cistern so ive been soaking it in a bucket of hot water and changing the water every now and then. Ill give keep doing this until i get some seachem purigen then put a spare internal in the bucket until its clear.

However once the tanins are gone will this mean it wont affect my ph?

My ph is fine as it is.

after looking at the pic of the wood in the bath ive realised my wood is alot darker more of a mahogany colour so it might not even be mopanni (its what came with the tank i just assumed it was mopanni).

Just FYI tannins stain baths! I had to scrub it for an hour and bleach it 3 times to get clean hahaha :shout:

Maybe it is bogwood? I have some of that too.... same tannin problems =] 2 weeks soaking and after 3 days the water has barely changed another week to be sure then it is getting added.

i got some bogwood and thats even darker this looks exactly like that piece in the bath but a diff colour.

and thanks for the tip our lass would of had a right job on if id put it in the bath lol

To be honest, I tried purigen and it didn't work wonders for me. Water changes are the key and the tannins will eventually go, just make sure you soak in warm water for two weeks before putting it in the tank to get rid of the worse of the tannins. Do not using boiling water on the wood.

I allready used boiling water on the first scrub as it had been in a coldwater carp tank previously. The wood has not been in water for 6 months but it had quite abit of green and dirt on it.

Kinda gross to look at in your toilet bowl, though! All that brown water ...

The average bowl gets flushed often enough that I doubt you'd see a real difference in the bowl. Maybe for the first few of flushes but eventually I think it'd be clear, probably withinj a day or two.

I think it's genius! Too bad I have a couple of pieces that are too big to fit..............

Mopani usually has very dark & very light parts to it. The piece on the left is Mopani, the smaller piece behind it is not:
