I had a similar experience, mine is gone and the only reason I can put it down too is that it was in or on some Bogwood when I removed it from the tank for tank maintenance. so lesson learnt for me I always double check now.

well my personal opinion is blue acara only due to the stripe in the eye but i'm still not 100% sure this one is getting a little feisty now.

Single gouramis especially males iv fond feud alot in my experience you would have been. Better off getting 2 pairs or 3 of the same species.
