+1 on the single betta. African clawed frogs are pretty tough too, but even one of them by itself might be pushing the stocking limit in a 5 gal.

Imo the reputation cardinals and neons get for being delicate comes from two main scenarios: People buying neoons that have "neon tetra disease" People trying to keep them in ph thats too high.

What size is your tank? I used to have a clown Plec that ate a couple trumpets a day, but I wouldn't put one of them in anything less than a 15 gal.

Ace hardware store brand ammonia is what I'm using to cycle my tank right now.

is it very tiny, as in less than an inch? If so, I'm leaning toward ruby tetra. a happy one has a strong red tint throughout, but lonely (strongly schooling fish) or stressed ones are about that color

The api test kit just arrived in the mail today, and it hows that the tap PH is about 8.2 and the aquarium, (which has a good-sized hunk of driftwood) is about 8.0 ...:/ While there are a few Gouramis that would survive in PH like that, I don't know of any smallish ones that would be happy with it.

Well, my API test kit arrived in the mail today and things just got a bit "harder" with the stocking list. Tap ph: about 8.2 and my Aquarium, which has water that's been soaking with a good size hunk of driftwood for 4 days, has  Ph: 8.0 ammonia: between 4 and 8 ppm (Don't worry, fishless cycle)...

I'm currently doing livestock selection for a 29 gal (110 litre) aquarium.   My sister insists on fancy guppies, and I Really want a Gourami.   Are there any gouramis that can be trusted with fancy guppies, or is one of us going to be dissapointed?
