    Plant weight strips

I’m not a fan of these, but found I had no choice but to use them because my substrate is a thin layer of sand around one and a half inch thick.Add three yo yo loaches and it’s easy to understand why I’ve had to use weight strips.I cut pieces of sponge to help protect the plant and attached the...

    Black cory’s cold water tank

Corys won’t just keep breeding when kept at a constant cool temp.Like DoubleDutch says,it’s to do with the rainy season,so if your tank water is kept at a constant 25 and you do a water change and refill with cooler water, say 22,then there’s a very good chance of eggs within a day or two. I keep...

    Some of my corys

I agree with you Colin.I have ruby barbs and a couple are really colourful,a very deep rich purple colour.Whenever I do water changes they can lighten up for a day or so before they get colourful again. The light coloured ones have a gold dust shimmer to them.I suppose all barbs are interesting...

    Some of my corys

Just noticed the "dodgy Cory" Colin haha Melon barbs are becoming a real favourite of mine. They don't cost much, their colours are amazing and they are right wee characters, just like the corys.

Looks like they are enjoying each other’s company, either that or they are planning a mob assault on another fish.

    Anubias flower

Yes,I just pour it into the water in the flow from the power head. I’m not one for fertz either and I only go as far as iron and potassium, they do seem to make a difference.

    Anubias flower

5ml per 100l of tank water is the dosage with the seachem flourish potassium.Use the bottle cap,as a full cap equals 5ml,so I add 4 caps to my 400l tank.straight forward. What size is your tank in litres?
  13. F

    Anubias flower

It explains the dosage on the bottle relative to water volume.
  14. F

    Anubias flower

Flourish potassium has the dosage on the bottle.I wouldn’t bother with the iron until you test your water source for iron first.

    Anubias flower

I would assume Anubias get most of the nutrients from fish waste and fish food, being such a slow grower. That said, what they lack in growth they gain in strength.Anubias are “thick skinned” so to speak and to keep that strength they need enough potassium, which also helps with flowering. I don’t...

    Anubias flower

A surprise this morning in that one of my anubias has produced a flower of brilliant white.I think this is the anubias wavy variety that I put in over a year ago.

    pH mystery

It would help to have a stable pH in order to work out water change amounts and how frequent.I will have to increase the amount of changes I do a week, but take less out with each water change. This is the simplest answer. Now here’s a question Colin. If I add the shells a bit at a time like you...

    pH mystery

What’s bothering me is why? I don’t mind the pH being at 6,but there are issues with putting new fish in,especially if there’s any weakness, which has happened a couple of times. The plot thickens though.I went to a friends this morning, who lives a few streets away.He has two tanks,a 200 and a...

    pH mystery

I’ve been trying to work out the issue with the pH of my aquarium water for some time now,but I still can’t work it out. The pH of the tank dropped to 6,and this happened quite suddenly after changing the gravel out and replacing it with sand.Since then (months ago) the pH has been dropping from...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Your tanks coming along great. The hygrophila is a very fast growing plant, just watch how much you trim off of it as taking too much off can shock it and stall its growth rate. Pentazona barbs are a great fish to have in a tank, very strong fish (health wise).I’ve never had any problems with mine...

    Forrest scape.

I chose the hobby and therefore chose the work involved, which probably isn’t any more labouring than the average aquarium Rocky998. There’s plenty of swimming room for each species,as not all species will be active at the same time, for example the plecostomus are 100% nocturnal and I hardly...

    Phosphate questions

I’ve never seen anubias as a house plant either, but it’s good to know. The problem I have will probably be with the light,as I seen an anubias leaf that was half brown, like a line drawn across it.The brown half was in the light, but the other half which was perfectly green was shaded by a leaf...

    Phosphate questions

I have roughly 8 anubias in there, along with three 1 2 grow Java moss pots and two bunches of heudelotii bolbitis. I don’t add anything in regards to fertz,or any other chemicals for that matter. The filter is rated 1550l per hour flow rate and there’s a power head 5000 l per hour.That’s...

Wills You are so correct wills,it’s a balancing act between keeping the tank ok for the corys ,the rams and the barbs. To be honest I doubt it’s possible, but I try my best to keep it as near as it possibly could be.So far the rams have survived for 9 months without any problems, but only time...

    Phosphate questions

My tap water contains 0.6 phosphate and I’m sure this is what’s affecting the anubias and ferns as they have always had brown stains on them that I can rub off. Obviously I can’t solve the problem with water changes because there will always be 0.6 phosphate. Can a uv light help eliminate this...

    180Litre community tank progress

The rams have been ok wills, but not sure what you mean by how do they fare.Do you mean temperament towards other fish or other fish temperament towards them? What are the rose like sharks,do you mean the denison barbs? The fish stock is Ruby barbs. 5 Tiger barbs. 5 Denison barbs. 17 Gold barbs. 6...

Yo-yo loach not eating or swimming- only laying on side, very skinny

Yoyo loaches need somewhere to sleep during light hours (if they choose to do so)They are also good at playing dead, lying on their sides,at least mines do.I had a single yoyo loach for a while and all it did was swim back and forth along the front glass.I added another two yoyos and they are all...

At last the hard scape of the ancient wood is complete after a lot of cutting, glueing and cleaning. Tomorrow will be setting up the new tank and hopefully it won’t take this long as I’ve a 130 mile drive to work on Monday.
