    Cutting rhizome plants

Is it possible to cut all the leaves and trim the roots of anubias and bolbitis to the point where only the rhizome is stuck to structure? I'm asking because there's BBA on the roots and leaves of mine and I want to start afresh, but still want to use the plants

I'm doing my head in: Northumbria Water messing with the supply

I wouldn’t mess with trying to chase pH. My local authorities did exactly the same last summer, but that was due to drought and therefore too much recycling. If your fish are ok then everything is fine, just do small but more regular water changes til things get back to what they should be.

Waterbox Marine X 110.4 Freshwater build....(Previously an AIO 65.4 build...Please read on in thread)

Looks an amazing tank and the lighting is really modern looking. You have done well with the scape and planting. Are all the plants attached to the structure? If so it’s a good idea for a low tech. Half a dozen black corys working over the light sand would produce a nice contrast, but needless to...

Loretta Cory, yellow Cory and a blue eyed rabauti Cory.

The Loretta cory has a tall dorsal fin and I noticed one has a black streak at the front of its dorsal and it looks amazing The yellow corys like to swim up in the water in order to clean the plants, which I like since corys are normally bottom dwellers unless they are surfing. The rabauti Cory...

    One for the nerds

Oh we get dry spells over here Gary.I live in the west of Scotland and come summer we can go 5 or 6 weeks without rain (a new phenomenon).Used to be that we got rain almost on a weekly basis, but not anymore. The weather in Britain is becoming more tropical believe it or not.We don’t get...

    Stocking question

That's always been an underlying question for myself,What is one meant to do when the shoal starts thinning out and no replenishing is planned e.g change of set up,giving up the hobby? I often wrestle with this thought,as I wouldn't give mine away,I'd rather let them die out naturally.

my friend possibly believes the neon tertra to be quite happy considering its 7yrs old,and adding more neons now might stress it.

    Stocking question

A friend has a 60 litre tank with 4 peppered corys,6 pentazona barbs and a neon.He was looking to add more so I thought I’d ask the question. Thanks for the replies folks,I’m glad I asked now.

    Stocking question

    Barbs,yoyo and corydoras

Well the Amazon frog it looks great.I doubt I could have it since I have plant munchers ha. I have salvinia and the roots don’t grow like the way the frogbit does. The powerhead is very strong so I need to let the leaves broaden more so it’s not constantly being churned under the surface.I have...

    Barbs,yoyo and corydoras

Yes the sessiliflora can have a lovely pink/red hue on the top whorls. When I had it in dense bunches in the 55 the water was gin clear, something I put down to the filtering abilities of this plant👍 Your sessiliflora looks really healthy, lush and green,as do all your plants. What are the floating...

    Barbs,yoyo and corydoras

Funny you should say that DoubleDutch,as my initial plan, when I first purchased an aquarium was to have a species tank, tiger barbs to be exact.I started with 18 tigers (not added all at once haha).A few didn’t make it,but instead of topping the shoal back up with more tigers,I opted for a small...

    Barbs,yoyo and corydoras

The yoyo is definitely female AdoraBelle and there are three of them in there. Sessiliflora was the very first plant I ever had in a 55g.They grow very fast in a gravel or sand substrate, but can be guilty of growing a little tall and spindly, but plant them into a base layer of nutrient rich soil...

    Algae identification

Thanks Byron, your conclusion is in line with my views too, algae is part of a mature and healthy aquarium. The algae is only growing on the inner side of the wood that receives most light, the rest is clear, meaning this could actually look quite nice.

    Algae identification

Thanks Byron, here’s another photo to see if you can make it out better. The algae doesn’t look too bad,it makes the wood actually look a bit better in my view,as long as it’s harmless.I could wipe it off if it gets too much, that’s really why I was asking if the fish would eat it as I wouldn’t...

    Algae identification

The algae is a dark green colour, though it looks brown in the photos. This stuff is growing in small tufts. Any ideas what it is and do fish eat it e.g plecs, otos.Another way to describe it is it’s like short fur. Answers appreciated thanks.

Restless denison barbs during a water change

Odessa, gold, tigers, green, melon, pentazona and Dennison barbs and black ruby The 🐯 barbs are quite chilled out.I started with 18 🐯 barbs 2yrs ago and their numbers whittled down to 6 over that period. Power head flow rate

Has this ever been discussed on the forum? I don't think we need to wait til the fish are being swept away before knowing when it's too high a rate. Would be interesting to find out opinions on the subject.

Restless denison barbs during a water change

Most of the fish do like a fast flow. The corys like it too.The tiger barbs are more lazy and like to sit behind a rock, letting the flow pass them by,just like in nature.

The big female is obviously just grubbing around when she dislodges a plant.I only have three and it’s the big female who does the damage as she is very powerful. She used to click her mouth quite a bit and I could almost feel the clicking through the glass, but that has stopped since I introduced...

    Plant weight strips

I doubt another inch of sand would stop two fully grown yo yo loaches from digging the plants up.They are strong fish Don't get me wrong it's a good idea for the future if the plant roots take hold in the sand depth I have at the moment.

    Plant weight strips

I was thinking the same thing,as long as I have the yoyo moles then I had better keep the clips for a while,if not forever. That’s also why I asked the question now,as I know later on the clips will be quite difficult to remove.
