Cleaning the filter should mean rinsing the media(sponge) in the old tank water and putting it back it. Anything else kills the beneficial bacteria. Do you get sunlight on the tank?

Probably a bit of "cheating a the edges" where they are mfd. Use 10% less heater coil you get 10% more product but in turn draw 10% more power. The local line voltage will have an effect also.

I expect it is made of particle board and will sag over time. While the tank edges sit nicely over internal baffles (my blue line) transferring the weight down to the lower horizontal piece (red) which has to carry the weight out to the legs.

I still prefer an covered opaque canopy illuminating the tank only.

This makes me sad. So far I purchased guppies from numerous sources, chain stores and craig's- list type individuals and none proved to be very robust or healthy. Most recently added an endler trio (likely hybrid) and my tank overflows. I would hate to see that vigour lost.
