Good choice. Enjoy the company car and all those holidays in Dubai. :)

    Parasites?

If I had to guess I’d say it’s something that she has passed that’s very sticky. In the first pic there seems to be a gap between her and it... is her breeding tube out? Maybe an egg gone wrong? @GaryE

    Maybe a bit creepy!

Congratulations to you for giving up while you’re still young, and for having such a wonderful person to help you through it. Tbh, I’ve always known I should quit, but it was never because I wanted to, always because I thought I should. You can’t do it like that, at least I couldn’t. I’ve...

    Maybe a bit creepy!

This is a picture of a so-called intelligent human after an estimated 300,000 cigarettes and 20kg of caffeine (that’s caffeine, not coffee). Taken a week after reducing my caffeine intake from 20+ cups a day to 3, and two days after reducing the cigarettes from 20+ to 3. I feel healthier...

Am I right that this has to be a male/female pair?

I’d say they look older than 6-8 months.

Am I right that this has to be a male/female pair?

I’m not as confident as Gary with these. I’ve seen pictures of breeding pairs of Laetacara where both fish look exactly the same, with long pointy fins. Maybe females can have long fins but males can’t have short fins? I don’t know. Also with just two of the same sex there will often be colour...

    Changing colour

Reduced brightness will help some, but they’ll always be pale on a pale substrate. It’s camouflage. They’re also stressed by not being in a group. To get them unstressed, dim the lighting, change to a darker, more natural substrate, and add four or five more.

    pH after Water changes

Tap water is artificially buffered to make sure it’s still within the “acceptable range” when it reaches your house. Leave some to stand for a day and you’ll see it’s true pH.

I didn’t do great either, but I passed Fish. ;)

    Have I done this correctly?

ppm and mg/l are the same. 71.2 and 106.8 are 5 and 7.5 Clarke, or 4 and 6 German. We usually call it in German, so your KH is 4 and GH is 6. (17.848 ppm is 1 German).

    Anyone id this Rift?

Thanks Colin. I’m not great with Rifts and the shape was throwing me. Resembled some kind of sand sifting type that I couldn’t put my finger on. Is it just a skinny Peacock?

    Pregnant or sick

I doubt it very much. You could try a bactericide or something (pure guess) but I’d say she’s too far gone.

    Pregnant or sick

That’s an extreme case of bloat. Prognosis isn’t good for this guppy.
  20. Ichthys

    Weird white build-up spots

It’s harmless. It’s called bloom. It’s insoluble particles in the rubber (a stabiliser to prevent the rubber from rotting) rising to the surface, because of humidity / water. It shows that it’s good quality rubber.

    Sexing help

They’re very easy to sex, but those aren’t the easiest pictures. Look at the pelvic fins. Short and rounded in females, long and pointed in males. Same for all Pelvic-achromis species.

Anyone have a map of a continent at home for habitat knowledge?

I have some very simple internet pictures of Africa and the Americas showing all the different river systems in different colours. What I would love is detailed maps showing the pHs of rivers as different colours, with hardness / tds info for each. This info is available for all rivers that have...

Which fish would you choose for a 56L tank with very hard water?

I suspect the 59cms isn’t the height. It’s a bit small for platies, but there’s a lot of unusual small livebearers that would work. A lot of fish can adapt to moderately hard water to some degree, but 400 is extremely hard and I wouldn’t put soft water fish anywhere near it.
  26. Ichthys

    What is wrong (with me)

Shoaling fish need a shoal, and most will become unsociable and even aggressive towards each other if the numbers are too small. Corys only go to the surface for air if there’s not enough oxygen in the water. And you’d be surprised by the amount of current Ember Tetras can handle with ease.
  27. Ichthys

    What is wrong (with me)

Very surprised to see zero water movement. There’s a surface film, which prevents gaseous exchange, so the oxygen available to the fish might be limited. Do the Corys go to the top for air? A filter outlet moving water across the surface will liven all of those fish up. For a 360L tank you...

    Water changes during cycling?

In other words, you can do a water change whenever you like during a cycle. Just top up the ammonia if you need to.

    Water changes during cycling?

You can do water changes whenever you like during a cycle. They can be necessary in very soft water.

Antibacterial medications are the usual way to treat epistylis. You can use a protozoacide to kill it but a bactericide is required to cure the bacterial skin infection. Cure that and the epistylis leaves the fish.
  32. Ichthys

    Ich?

It obviously doesn’t look like Ich. Ich cysts are all the same size (supported by the fact that the Ich med hasn’t worked). :) This looks more like epistylis, which is a protozoan feeding on a bacterial skin infection. I would treat with a bactericide.
  33. Ichthys

What do you think of this channel?

Absolutely not. Tanks should, ideally, reflect the natural biotope of the fish. Not all fish live in planted areas. Some live among rocks, among roots, or out in open water, etc etc.

Can a fish out and out just not like a light?

From SeriouslyFish… “The male fish has 12-14 dorsal fin rays while the female has only 9-12. When in breeding condition the anal fin of the male swells and thickens.”

Can a fish out and out just not like a light?

The smilie didn’t have the desired effect, but I’m not offended, especially now that I know you didn’t mean it that way. :) I don’t know what “adverse behaviour” you would be expecting, but that doesn’t prove the fish isn’t affected by being on its own. And if you had kept them in groups you...

Did I lose the honey gourami sexing lottery?

I would say probably two males. Based on the back ends of the dorsal and anal fins having a slight pointedness to them, relative to females (it’s very subtle), and the fact that the body, underneath, starts to taper up to the peduncle from the “chest” (males) rather than further back at the...

    Opinions on neon tetras

The thing I love most about Neons and Cardinals is that when seen from the side the blue stripe is… blue. When seen from lower down its green, and when seen from higher up it’s purple. FYI, a lot of people think Neons got their name from the blue stripe. In fact they got it from the red...

Do Orinoco ram cichlids like caves?

They like lots of decor so they can dive out of sight if they need to. Even if they don’t need to, it gives them the security of knowing they can. It takes fish a long time to realise that a predator isn’t going to swim by at any moment. Some never do.
  39. Ichthys

    Opinions on neon tetras

I would only change one thing in GaryE’s reply, and that is that they’re best in groups of around 10 or more, which is what he meant anyway. I’ve never had an issue with Neons, although I haven’t kept them for a long time. I always plump for Cardinals over Neons.

Can a fish out and out just not like a light?

You mean like assuming a vet that didn’t do the research that proves the benefits knows more than the ichthyologists that did?
