Thought I would just share a few photo's of my snakeskin Guppy fry with you! When they were first born I had 2 large Platys in the tank and a small Guppy, we assumed the fry came from the Platys but as you can see they didn't which was a nice surprise. :)...

My two platys gave birth to approx 40 fry about 7 wks ago, the fry have guppy like patterned tails and spots on their sides, is it possible for Platys to mate with Guppies??

Well she has proved you all wrong, tea time today she had approx 20 fry!! I wasn't in at the time but she may have eaten some!

Came down this morning to find 5 guppy fry in my tank, Mother was in a tank with 4 other guppies as she didn't look pregnant, managed to rescue the remainding 5 guppies, there were a few dead ones in their and also bits of fry, was it her loving tankmates who possibly ate the rest and damaged...

Yes she died during the night, I will keep an eye on the others, the males seem fine as they were in a different tank but I have 2 more females that were in the same tank as the two that have died.

Hi Thanks for your comments, I only got her and 5 others last week from lfs one has already died, they are in a tank with 40 odd platys fry should i move them to my 350 litre tank??

Excellent thanks for your replies it has helped alot, yes the 60 litre is a well cycled tank as for the 25 litre tank it only got set up yesterday so is in the process of being cycled, i have added Interpet Filter Start which I then add every two days and also feed the tank fish flakes, will do...

In the last few days our female Platys have had approx 40 fry, I have a 60 litre tank and a 25 litre tank, bearing in mind these platys will go to new homes as soon as they are large enough, how many fry per tank please?

The new tank I am going to put the 12 fry in (found one more) is a 25 litre, will i need an air pump?? When they are big enough I have 2 friends who want some and the others can go in my 350 litre tank and then I can start again! :look:

Hi, I am going for a 25 litre tank as I have just 11 platys fry. the mother will now return to my 350 litre tank, so no more fry as they will never survive in there, when these 11 are big enough to give to my friends I will start over again, do i need an air pump with a 25 litre tank??

Yes I think I will do twice weekly water changes rather than one, how long are the fry ok in the breeding net for??

Thanks! They are in a breeding net in a 60 litre tank with mum and one other pregnant platys and 7 guppies, yes filter is cycled.

8 has now become 11!!!!! I have fed them with Tetramin is it daily water changes of 10%??? :D

At last we have fry - 8 or 9 to be exact I caught this afternoon, one is still in with 2 platys and 7 guppies!! They are so cute! :hyper:

Yes I think I will go with the 25 litre as it doesn't take up much room, once the fry are big enough I can put them in the 60 litre tank when big enough, thanks for all your helpful comments!

Once the platys have had their fry I will put them back in the 350 litre tank and when I notice two guppies are pregnant the rest will go back in the 350 litre tank also, as I only want to raise 2 or three lots of fry at once, then once my 3 tropical fish friends have had them I can start again...

I have a 350 litre community tank with sharks, loaches, barbs, plecs, catfish, etc in and a 60 litre tank which has my 2 pregnant platys in and 6 guppies (2 male and 5 female) which I got today, when the platys have their fry do I get a new tank set up for them if so what size? or just keep them...

Its now 19 days since the first photo I took of the massive pregnant platies and still no fry, they hide away most of the day only coming out when I feed them, both still have the white tube sticking out, very dark gravid spots, I hate to think how many fry are inside those two! I keep wondering...

Sounds weird but the tube on the larger platys looks like it is more open today?? Still no fry! I know I am impatient!!

Are my platies definately pregnant or just been overfed by the previous owner?? I have had them almost two wks and they look huge there is a white tube thing sticking out but poo is coming out of that?? Sorry I sound dumb but must ask!!

I am starting to wonder whether these fish have been overfed by the previous owner and aren't pregnant?? the birthing tube that i can see is a white sticky out bit and poo comes out aswell?? Sorry if I sound dumb but this is all new to me, I will try and take more photo's tonight.

I put her in the net last night with no problems and have just had a look and she has died in the night :sad:

They are huge on the photo and that was 8 days ago!!

One of the platies has definately got the birthing tube visable, should i put her in the fry net before i go to bed if she hasn't had them before that??

As there are 3 pregnant platies am I best to keep the fry in a net incase the other two platies eat them?? Until they have all given...

Hi, Last week I was given 3 pregnant platies ( 2 of which are on the photo) they are in a 60 litre tank by themselves, do they look ready to give birth anytime soon?? Being a new mum I really don't know what to look out for. Thanks!
