New Platys Mum

They'll come when you least expect it... Mine did. :)
You could set new world record, the most amount of fry by one platy.

Oh, and when they do drop, photos of cute little fry please :3

You bet I will put photo's of fry on as soon as they arrive!! Am I right in saying Platys are pregnant for 29-32 days I read somewhere?? I have Tetramin waiting, breeding net and plastic tank I am like an expectant mother!! How often do you have to feed them and do you do a daily water change and if so what percentage please? Thanks :D

At last we have fry - 8 or 9 to be exact I caught this afternoon, one is still in with 2 platys and 7 guppies!! They are so cute! :hyper:

8 has now become 11!!!!! I have fed them with Tetramin is it daily water changes of 10%??? :D

Congrats! Glad they've arrived at last.

Have you put them in a seperate tank? As for water changes. My cory babies are currently on 50% water change daily but the platy fry get about 50% every 2-3 days. It depends on if the filter is cycled or if you've just got them in with a heater and air stone.

Thanks! They are in a breeding net in a 60 litre tank with mum and one other pregnant platys and 7 guppies, yes filter is cycled.

it's up to you with the water changes. If you want to change 10% a day it won't harm. Personally I wouldn't worry too much just yet as your cycled filter should just increase it's bacteria to cope with the extra fish and fry have a small bio load.

If it was me I'd just increase weekly water change to twice weekly but someone else may disagree :)

Yes I think I will do twice weekly water changes rather than one, how long are the fry ok in the breeding net for??

Aww congrats! They have finally arrived! I have just one tank and I do a 10% change every day and 50% on a sunday. I also clean the trap with a turkey baster, picking up waste a few times a day.
They stay in the trap for 3-4 weeks then are let free, by that time a different female needs to use the trap
Can't wait to see pics!

The new tank I am going to put the 12 fry in (found one more) is a 25 litre, will i need an air pump?? When they are big enough I have 2 friends who want some and the others can go in my 350 litre tank and then I can start again! :look:

overfed fish are fatter at the front than the back, not square like yours.

one of my females has a birthing tube that has been open since her first drop.

Edit: oh sorry i didnt notice you'd gone onto a second page

Ok so the other female platys has had approx 28 fry today, so now have approx 40 fry in the breeding net!! How hard is it to take fry photo's have attached the only decent one.

I like to have my fry in a tank with nothing but other fry. Unfortunately that means that I must monitor the population in my fry tank as if it were an adult population. Fry are a fish population, much like any other fish, and their population vs a specific tank arrangement must be judged as just that, a potential fish population in the fry grow out tank. If your stocking levels are too high, they are. It does not mean that I don't support you but rather that you have chosen to house too many fry in your new grow out tank. I wish you all of the best but find that most people will underestimate the impact of their fry population. They end up overstocked and can make not make reasonable accommodations for their fry. If you think this describes your particular situation, take heart in doing huge daily water changes that will offset most water quality problems that you might otherwise have.

Thanks old man for your comments they are most helpful, at present they are in a breeding net in a 60 litre tank with 7 guppies which i can move to my 350 litre tank, also I have arriving on Friday a 25 litre new tank which obviously will need cycling, I am hoping to share the fry between the two, when big enough I have plenty of friends to pass them on to, would that be ok??

how are they doing now. if you're tank is big enough and had plants, stones or enough space that the fry can hide during their birth there is no need to place the female in a net as it sometimes stresses them. to identify if the fish is really pregnant, in the case of platy it is quite easier depending on its color. some platy's belly are transparent enough for you to see that there are baby platies on her bellies growing, or the eyes of baby platies can be seen easily on females belly to identify that its pregnant.
